Whats better Sub-Domain or Sub-Folder?

Currently I've got an X-Cart (e-commerce) site as my root index page. I plan on putting a forum on the site, in terms of SEO and usability what would you recommend: subdomain or subfolder?

Also, in your opinion what is the best folder name: forum, forums, discussion, board etc.

    Thanks,
    Ty

Somehow... forum seems to work better on sub-domains and blogs on sub-folders!
As regards the title, 'forum' appears good to me and so also 'board'! :)

if you are considering SEO, then subfolder would work better. folders are considered as part of the site where subdomains are considered as separate sites

If I were you, I would give a go with subdomain instead of subfolder in this case. Subdomain is easier to working with, especially for forum type website.

Apart from this, you may already know that Google has treated as a separate website for subdomain. If you have build enough links and authority, then you can put link at subdomain pointing toward your homepage to increase backlinks later.
