What's better for SEO?

  1. A unique article on your website.

  2. A unique article in a few dozen directories giving you backlinks.

or a unique article reposted in a dozen or two article directories with your link in the article?

You cannot have both, because if you posted the unique article on your website, then into article directories, it wouldn't be unique to Google, so you cannot have both.

What will provide better SERP results?

with the way serps are being viewed lately, you'll probably get a different answer from each person who answers your thread.

Personally, I'd prefer the original article on your site, assuming of course that it is not 6 pages deep and the site is being crawled regularly.

i would publish the article to my own site, leave it a few months so that search engines index the unique article on my site first (so google n others know your the original author), then submit it to article directories and stuff for the free backlinks.

    All articles are unique.

If its not unique then its a copy and paste job.

    The poll should be:

    Whats worse for seo:

    - Copying an article
    - Not submitting to 12 particular directories

It's not unique if you post it on your site then submit it to 100 article directories.

Thats why should let your own site get crawled before submitting.

Anyway, I don't go near article directories.

    edit:

Actually, I made mistake. I didnt notice the word 'article' in your original post. Apologies. The poll makes sense now.

If google finds it on your site first then it should know that you are the originator and other sites have duplicated. Thats why its best to submit month-old articles.

I am in complete agreement with this. I also agree that you will not be given a duplicate content penalty because you are seen as the authority site (once you have had that page indexed).

Build value in your site with unique content. This will then be cited by others earning quality one way links to your site.

I hear that all the time, and yes it's true, but the truth is that you will not earn a terribly high amount of links compared to if you just went out and actively pursued links.

You need traffic before your content will get cited on other sites (webmasters looking to link to your content don't just come out of nowhere), in order to get traffic, you need links on other sites. So you cannot just post good content (except on rare exceptions) and people will magically come out of nowhere to link to it.

But once you get the site rolling and people coming in, then the authentic quality links will come in by themselves.

IMO, a good article on your own website is better, because a good article can attract visitors, help them find what they are looking for and it will make you generic links.

Visitors will link to good material on other forums. So you his two birds with one stone.

    Cheers,
    Nima

I will write an article for my site, then rewrite it for article submission. Also, there are writers who 'spin' articles (do a search on Google for this if you don't know what 'spinning' is). If given the choice between a dozen or two directories, DEFINATELY the article directories. Assuming a decent article in a decent directory, you might end up with hundreds of backlinks. And of course, may even garner some business from it. :)
