I've had great success using OSCommerce on three different projects over the years. It has lots of functionality and it will indeed support paypal as a payment processor.
Free shopping carts having some problem with the support. Most of the free scripts having some problems with the payment sections. So choosing a free shopping cart script for your business is not good. Go for some paid shopping cart scripts.
There really are a ton of problems, support like fernades said was my biggest issue when tring to find a free cart script. Opencart has a big following that is user updated. with a support forum.
I think it may depend on what system you are running. from the joomla forums I got nothing but praise for virtuemart. It has paypal and apparently a lot of display options, but again, it may depend on if you want something specific for a certain cms or not.
