Alright, I have been a vbulletin forum admin for alot of years now. I know the ins and outs of the software itself but am a bit of a newb when it comes to anything programming. I recently started up a new website and all I've heard from people is concentrate on SEO from the beginning. I'd do that if I knew exactly what that meant. Can someone clue me in alittle or link me to an SEO for dummies thread?

First figure out what site is about. Next do keyword research. Use tool on this forum and try to find keywords for your site that have good traffic and less sites listed for them.

Then make sure to have keywords in site and title. You also need to submit site to search engines and get links to it.

so if I am paying a company to list my site to all the major search engines and paying for social bookmarks to be placed out on all those type of sites am I good? I've already added in meta info and keywords. There is a tool on here that will check the keywords I have used and tell me if they are good or not?

Well... use a little logic. If it was that easy to get ranked highly in the search engines.. we'd all rank top 10. Unfortunately there is a TON to learn from the basics.. to more complex stuff like Phrase Based Indexing and Retrieval....

It may not be rocket science... but it ain't baking a cake either...

There is no tool that tells you which KWs or Phrases are winners. That is where the fun comes in. Researching and Targeting KWs/Phrases is huge. Having a Top 10 ranking for a term that brings little traffic or fails to convert happens all the time.

    You really need to

    a. Dig in and start learning about it and applying it to your site
    b. seek professional help

There is no easy way .. he he

so, thus far based on comments it seems to be all about the keywords. I'll take a look at the links you posted gypsy over the next few days. Thanks for taking the time to post them for me. I guess if I really want this site to do well I need to really work more on this aspect of it. My previous site I never gave it any thought pretty much. Once I had 25-50 keywords added in I never looked back. I'm going to work on taking a better approach this time around.

Yuppers... as with anything really... the more you put into it - the more you'll get back.

Outside of SEO - look into other avenues of internet marketing such as Social Media Marketing and then even check out stuff on conversions

    1. SEO (and internet marketing) to bring the traffic
    2. Conversion methodologies to make the most of said traffic

    They kind of go together.

As for SEO - the whole KW/Phrase targeting aspects can make or break a campaign. Nothing worse than spending 6 months getting to Top 5 with a phrase that dies on the table ( brings little traffic ) - so choosing the right targets is a biggy and a great place to start
