Whats a good CTR?

    Hey guys,
How would you determine what is a poor, fair and very good CTR?
Or even more importantly, how does Google determine what a good CTR is?

I'm asking this cause most of my keywords have a CTR of about 5-6% and I don't know if I should be happy with this result or do something about it.

    Thanks.

It depends on where your advert's appearing. If you're in 8th position, 5% is excellent. If you're top, it's fair.

Either way, you should still keep testing new adverts to improve it.

Perhaps more important than CTR is your conversion rate. It's no good having a good CTR but not be able to convert the people that get to your site. Your CTR might be great if you say 'Free Books!' but if you don't offer free books your conversion will be terrible.

CTR is just one indication of a successful ad. I generally find the more specific the search term the better the CTR.

I agree with the above two comments, AND you should also consider the number of searches on a particular keyword.

There is no good CTR. Higher is better. As CustardMite said, it depends on your ad position. Top ads should have higher CTR, and ads the bottom usually have less.

Have to agree with you on this point.

It's usually the Techy Vs Marketer battle.

The tech part of you concentrating on the CTR, clicks, etc and the Marketing/business side thinking about the bottom line - Conversions, Income & Profit.

We all have to strike a balance
