Zero to 50% would be good. If you're providing good, interesting content then they will tend to stay longer.
I guess it depends on the niche and the specific pages indexed in the SEs along with other criteria. Our site at launch was around 70+% and these days it is around less than 50%. You should track yours and see how low you can get it.
my mobile review site ( buying a mobile phone in my sig link ) has a bounce rate of 0.92% overall. I definately think something in my analytics is screwed.
Google itself says 40% is good. One of my sites is at 12%, but doesn't have much traffic, another site is between 30-40% depending on the day. When I get a larger influx of traffic the bounce rate invariably goes up because much of the influx is not targeted traffic. You have to look at where the bounces are going, if your bounces are leaving through an advertisement, fantastic.
Interestingly, my best performing website is around 40% bounce rate. The others have higher bouncing.
