I think for search engines it's about content, while for people it's about looking good first (looks do matter) and content right below it. Think about it, when you first go to the page your eyes see the layout/images, and then you start reading. So if it looks really bad, you're likely just going to hit the back button without reading. There's various things you can do to generate sales, I assume you are selling your own product? If so, be an authority on your product and have plenty of information about it, testimonials, a way to easily contact you, and pictures of the product itself. You'll be on your way in no time
To make your website a money making machine, in my opinion, you need to have a very defined and attractive sales funnel. Give the visitor something valuable for free, a report, a sample of your product, just something where they think "Yeah. Good value!" in return for their email address. Once you get their email address, you already know what niche they are interested in and you can market appropriate products to them over and over. Done correctly, they will love you.
