Well. If you've got a site and you want to add it to a web directory to increase your traffic and search engine position, etc. Which option would you go for?

Would you: 1- Add it to a paid web directory (one time permanent small charge) with over 50,000 unique visitors per month?
or 2- Add it to a free web directory with less traffic and ads?

Vote, incase you don't feel like typing your opinion.

    as you said,
only a small charge for a permanent link,
it's not bad for the paid directory.

    Hi,

Fine, with increase of traffic for a little pay. I am not sure Google considers this as good SEO techniques, so keep away from paid listing. I would suggest and prefer more of unpaid submissions, manual ones for long term benefits, result is eventual but more fruitful.

I will get listed in paid directory. Atleast i will be having traffic. Its not that google devalue links from paid directories. Google dont devalue links from yahoo directory for sure though yahoo directory charge $299 a year for every listing.

Your question makes quite a few assumptions...

1 - You will only be submitting to one directory.

    2 - The 50,000 number is true.

3 - That at least some of the 50,000 visitors will actually visit the page your site is listed on.

4 - That the site with less traffic will send you less visitors.

The only correct answer here is to submit to both. Of course that is also assuming that both directories are well maintained and the categories are kept on topic.

I've always been under the impression that directories are just there for the backlinks. I don't even think if a directory gets 5,000 visitors a day will you even see a trickle of traffic directly from it.

I dont care about the traffic, the most important is high PR dofollow directory
and most of them are free, so vote for free directory

AT THE MONMENT I just used the 2, I think that's the way you can control your links, but would like to start 1, but just don't know this way of increasing your links to fast will do harmful to your site and will be downgraded by Google?

Actually, it depends on clients. If they sell products/services then they will go with paid high traffic. If all they want is PR increasement then they will go with free high PR directories no matter what are the conditions of the directory.

    Only webmaster visits directories.
There are not customers so I do not want to pay because I know only webmaster visits my sites, no my target clients. And google does not count a paid link also.

Sorry to contradict, but that is not true. You shouldn't be a webmaster to search a web directory for a tutorials site for example. Yet, this thread is aimed at views of webmasters.

The directory is not up yet, I am still analyzing and gathering required information.

I will go for option 2. Paid directory sucks. Google do not love them You may get some traffic initially but itn not for sure. You loose money too.
