What Would You Do? Good .Net Vs Decent .Com Domain?

If you had to choose between a good .NET domain, or a decent .COM domain, what would you choose?

I am making a new site, and out of the domains I want, the one I really want uses .NET, but I was not sure if that would really effect my profit?

    What would you guys suggest?

.net or .com shouldn't have anything to do with whether you make profit or not

Thats one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.

.com is for commercial / company websites
.net I believe is for general interest websites

.com is more common, but shouldn't affect your profit at all.
the worlds most popular casino sites are .net sites
    www.fulltiltpoker.net for example

It's all about what comes before the dot

There is nothing wrong with .net domains. Granted, .com are generally first choice for most people, but if I had to choose between a mediocre .com domain, and a great .net domain, I would go with the .net every time. It is getting hard to find great .com domains anymore, although once in awhile you can get lucky. Because of that, .net, .org, and .info domains are becoming more popular. As for profit, I doubt it will make any real difference, if any at all, if you go with the .net.

Dchelix, I never knew that, thanks for sharing that. But don't a lot of general interest / non-commercial websites use .com names? Was that just the original intent for .com? Just wondering...

It depends where you expect your audience to come from.

.com has the advantage of being the most familiar to regular folks. If you have a .net domain, you'll lose some people to yourdomain.com, who may or may not come back, if you ask them to type in the URL directly. So if you're planning to advertise in print, or tell people your domain name, having a .net could be problematic.

But links don't care if you are a .com or a .net. If your main source of traffic will be links, it isn't really relevant.

And having a "good name" is more important for SEO, so if that is a chief driver of traffic, consider taking the "better" .net

So really the answer is, "it depends". There is no answer that is always right.

Lol, Perry's advice is better than most in this section...but he's fond of using sarcasm.

Anyway, a .net domain should have no bearing on the outcome of your site if the .com is merely being squatted. Doesn't have any effect on PR/SERPS/SEO/whatever.

The site in my sig is a .net domain, and if you were to do a Google search for "cashgamers" you'd only be able to find .net pages indexed in the SERPS for the first 10 pages or so...I've blown the .com counterpart out of the water.

.com sites are commonly viewed as better websites overall then .net (second rank). However you can make money with anything....but it's best to give yourself every little advantage. I would go with the .com unless the .net adds some special meaning and fits in better with you domain name

I would ask you to consider where your users are coming from.

If your users are primarily coming from search engines, then get the really good .net name, but if you primarily want users to remember your domain, get the .com as most people will type that in automatically. This is just a general rule, but I consider myself experienced with the internet and continuously type in .com to sites that really .net or .org. Just by default.

This is absolutely correct. I was about to make this post but saw someone already had. I've made bold the most important part...

If you're talking organic search, then it really doesnt matter, as long as you've got keywords listed in your domain (big plus), and use the keyword in your page title, then you're set.

I've seen .info domains take the lead on several popular keywords.

Man, I could have sworn nobody had said that when I made my post, but that's what the original author gets for making his post so long, :) jk (he put it better than I did)
