What would it take to replace Google

I know nothing last forever, Google might still be around when the next search technology comes out, but I think something radical would have to replace something that has worked so well.

In my opinion Google is trying to be all-in-one web-wonder, I know they have the brains and $$ to keep them going, I wish them the best, but is this all we have look forward to? is this it? did we reach the pinnacle of our technology? as I stated above something radical has to replace it, from what I have seen so far none are even close, some dabble with moving away from the basic search but none completely abandon it, again there is nothing wrong with the way it is now, its just going to have to be done in a new innovative interface, the way we interface with search engines has to change for it to be ever replaced.

We all know that money alone is not the answer. Microsoft has proved this to be the case!
So I reckon, like shabbirbhimani stated above - simplicity and innovation cold be the answer - something that will catch on really fast the way Facebook has.

Google is simply one of thousands of publicly-traded corporations of all kinds competing for customers in the free market.

To surpass or replace Google, another corporation needs to provide a better product, of higher quality, providing more value. Consumers are smart. They will opt for what best meets their needs. If company XYZ provides that better product, that "giant sucking sound" you hear (to quote Ross Perot) will be former Google surfers heading on over to company XYZ's search engine, or whatever similar product they have designed that surpasses the value of all present search engines.

Maybe something is already out and we don't know about it yet, I am going to predict it would be a browser with built in search engine.

Buckets of cash. Theynb are so large now that whoever tries to knock them off their pedestal is going to need the cash to withstand the fightback

It's damn hard. They've done an insanely good job since the very beginning, and now they're getting to a point where they're just way too powerful to be beat, save for a sudden stroke of genius on behalf of some other extremely powerful entity, or government intervention.

I'm not sure I like it. Google are doing good things, but it's never entirely comfortable to have a company in a position like that, with that much power. They kinda own the internet at this stage, you know.

That is a problem, don't call me a pessimist but I can't help it, there comes a time in any company for it to stay alive it would have to crush the competition with brute force(buying it out right or taking it to court for many years claiming copyright and trademark), frankly I see Google being one of those that will try to crush you when it get too big and self centered.

I don't believe anyone will be able to take over Goolge. As none has been able to take over Microsoft in the OS market. They're too big and too powerful, if some SE are good enough, they'll either buy them out for force them out. It is sad ... but a reality. I don't see Microsoft Windows going out anytime soon ... maybe in 30 years, Linux will take around 10% of the OS market, but they'll still be dominant and I don't see anyone capable of taking on them.

Google will remain top for a long long long time to come! The day google is bankrupt is the day the internet is neglected

As long as we never try new things Google will stay on top, we all know why we did start using Google, I am sure you have a story when you first encountered Google, but imagine the same with a new shiner and much more improved. We all have habits that one can change from time to time, it might not be one of us but the next generation who has grown to use and enjoy it might not be as loyal.

I was hearing in the news that MS and other are now going to pay you for using their search engine, what do you think of that approach.

    Yeah I totally agree,
MSN and Yahoo are discriminating people from other countries not letting them to participate in their program and research so it's impossible for them to make a better one. :p
