Let's say you used to be on a first page for particular keywords and slowly lost your positions and moved to the second page on Google. What is the fastest way to move back on a first page? Is links building still 911 or something new works better and faster?
It all boils down to how much Google "trusts" your site to give content that people want to read. There's no use blasting your link everywhere because the big G knows by now that SEOs do that to game the system. The trick is to get your link placed on sites which are relevant AND helpful to your market. Big example here - a friend of mine had a site on page 3 of google for its domain name. He got featured on Apple.com and BAM shot to the top for 5 key words I think. It's all about being natural. Think about if a big company did it, what would they do?
it depnds on what the sites you are competing against are doing. if they are all static site sthen consistent link building will do the trick. If your competitiors are feeding fresh content to their sites everyday then you will have to do the same to outrank them.
hi hquinn; backlinks are links from other sites pointing at your site, eg siteB has a link that points at siteA (yours). It is best that siteA does not link back to site B in return as this is seen as reciprocal linking and does not have the same value. here is an article that explains it all: Angela V. My suggestion is to work so hard. If you have blog, make so good posts with so much good keywords and get traffic...do some good marketing. If you have forum, it will be a bit harder. You should then get reeeaaally much traffic and make interesting posts where people will stay and reply. Also, that posts should be with good keywords to be indexed in google asap. Yes , link building is still 911 for this situation. if you drop more than 3 pages than link building might not the best solution. Update more new content and build more quality link building in the short time. If possible , get .edu and .gov backlink . If influence your site rank alot and fast.

For me the best strategy to get back position on first page position is to spread quality information about products or services because the online marketing competition is going to be tough day by day, its only the way to secure current position or to upgrade it.
Quality content and natural quality links ... If you try to manipulate the rankings by any method you learned from here and there, Google would obviously penalize it (remember Panda and Penguin updates recently).
