*Not too sure if this is the right place to post this, if not, please can you move it.

    Anyways.....

I am thinking about purchasing another couple of domains, however i am not sure what the best option would be if the .com is taken.

Does it depend on what the site is going to be used for etc...?

Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Another question: Why are .info's so popular with proxies?

.com - companies, general websites ie. amazon.com, britneyspears.com

    .org - non-profit, organizations, ie. w3.org, wikipedia.org

.net - networks, internet service providers, ie. verizon.net, authorize.net

    .info - information, .com alternative

    .biz - businesses, .com alternative

Thanks the_gallery, that gives me a better understanding now. In terms of advertising and marketing, are any of them better than others?

Another reason .info is popular is because many registrars were practically giving them away.
I saw a couple registrars selling them for $0.99 last year. One was giving them away for free!

IMO, most people searching on the net will give preference to TLDs like .com or .net simply because
they were the original suffixes and the average surfer believes they have more "credibility".

After .com, the next big hit will be .info.

I seriously doubt that, especially due to the fact that quite a few .info are used by spammers and MFA's, which happens due to low price at which they are being sold by major registrars. If this trend continues long, it would be more like .tk than .com!

I like .net There are many good sites using a .net .info may make sense for certain names and sites, but all in all I think they look way spammy. People associate .info with spam a lot, mainly because so many crappy sites use it. Just make sure that when you go with a .net, you go the extra mile branding yourself with that extension, in your logo and everywhere.

rubbish. Can't remember where I read it, but I did read recently that something like 97% of all .info domains hosted spam, it's a cheap and nasty extension used by marketing cheapskates...sorry to all those who use it, I bought a .info site the other day, my first ever .info domain, liked the site, a shame about the name :D

Rule of thumb: .com first. .net/ .org in that order. .tv only if it's a clever name, anything else has to be brilliant to be considered in terms of the name because the extensions aren't worth it.

cos .info are pretty cheap and proxies dont last forever as they end up getting blocked and those who are into proxies prefer to make loads of proxy sites and hence , .info are popular with proxies .

am i right to say that .info was the latest to be released? If so, then cause it is not so crowded yet, it is easier to get the names u want.....

The cost in buying a .net domain over a .info is hardly huge, so if the credibility factor is an issue, go .net.

Personally, I've had no problems with using .info. As long as the site and content itself is good, I don't think people have a problem with a .info site. That said, I've come across people who say that in terms of SEO, .info isn't as easy to get good rankings etc...although I'm yet to see concrete proof of that being the case.
