What would be the best way to learn graphic design?

I would like to spend some time (probably around a year or two) learning graphic design at home. I was looking at a website I found in Goolge (online school), and they cover the following topics (offer courses):

    Color theory
    Typography I
    Drawing I
    Photoshop I
    English composition

    Design and composition
    Logo design I
    Illustrator I
    Digital photography I
    Computer technology I
    HTML and CSS I
    Typography II
    History of art
    General psychology

    Indesign I
    Graphic design I
    Intro to marketing
    The study of graphic design
    Business and technical writing

    Dreamweaver I
    Print production
    Branding and identity
    Logo design II

    Layout design
    Packaging design
    Graphic design II
    Design business
    Capstone project
    Portfolio review

I would like to go through something like that, but with books from somewhere like Amazon.com, and other sources online. Can you recommend some good / professional sources / wesbites / books to get started with learning graphic design?

(I am not totally new to this, I've been making websites for a while now. I know HTML, CSS, Photoshop; I am thinking more about things like color theory <I read about it several times too, things like colorschemedesigner.com etc>, typography, drawing, design and composition, logo design, history of art, graphic design, layout design)

    Thank you.

Graphic design can be learnt where the first step involves observing other graphic art. Just observe closely how the technical things are involved in it.

Try recreating logos and graphics in a program your comfortable with. When you can't figure it out look up how to do it on youtube or even ask here. 20K seems like a lot of money to drop on something i learned for free.

For graphic design you will need to get very, very familiar with PhotoShop and Illustrator.Just these two programs should keep you occupied for a couple years if you are serious about design.....there are many free resources that are excellent to get you started, check out thenewboston on youtube for some good tutorials to start.

Start doing tutorials. These video courses aren't going to teach you that much. Learn the software of your choice inside-out, every single little feature and how it works. From then on it's just practice, practice, practice and more practice. After you've learned your software, a good way to learn to truly design is by trying to recreate other people's works ( of course only for your own experience ). After you figure out how other people do it, you have to start getting creative. Really it's all about the practice and the time you've spent.

Knowing how your software works is crucial and it takes a long time. However learning how design works, and practicing takes a lot longer. If you spend 2 years you'll probably have a very good understanding of your software and some design principles and experience. But it probably wont turn you into a real professional. If you truly love design and if you put a lot of effort and dedication, then you will be able to create astounding works.

Lynda.com is a great resource. I used it to learn Indesign in 11 hours, and then promptly got a job using it. If you're good at learning quickly you can achieve a LOT with Lynda.com.

I did get a 4yr degree in video game design through the art institutes program and it does provide you with some value. Part of learning is really letting things soak in. When you're in school for several years there are many projects and tasks asked of you (and other students). In that environment you (for lack of a better word) bump into each other and get creative ideas from each other. You're all in an intense training program and are always cultivating in yourself a specific mindset (it's why designers are often hipsters imo).

So if you're learning on your own, try to join any kind of communities that you can to maintain your focus and mindset. Join deviantart, conceptart.org, any of the cgtalk type websites (depending on what your focus is). Many of them have user contests that you can use as assignments to challenge yourself.

    Good luck.

I recently found another article about the relative merits of art school vs your own online education, and the online offerings these days are getting pretty good. The article added a few resources that weren't mentioned here.

    Article:
    https://medium.com/i-m-h-o/138c5efd45e9

One of the things mentioned is to create accountability. I think this is important, unless you're exceptional at pushing yourself and staying on track, this will be hard. Also, if you can force yourself a bit while learning specific software it will help too. For example say you're trying to learn logo design and you have an idea of the logo you want but are having trouble making it in the program you are learning. If there is no pressure you might say, "It's good enough" or "I'll just change this part of the design". If you were working for a client that wouldn't be possible. So once you start to get better at a program, take on small jobs on fiverr or a similar site. With a client on the line, you'll push yourself to find solutions more and REALLY try to find out how to do things you'd have never thought of otherwise.

    my tips :) :
one of the most effective for learning graphic design, is that you have spent lot of time to look(see) many.. many.. and many graphics source or images, and collecting a lot of references (depend on your interest fields).
you can learn fast beside teory and learn software.

If you're looking to drop 20K, you'd probably do better just enrolling in an art school or community college. You can learn all of that in a two year course and spend a fraction of the money. Besides that, there's a lot to be said for a physical learning environment, especially when first learning a new subject.
