    None has the advantage...

The advantage goes to he/she who's SEO-Fu is strong.. it will come down to the content, on-page factors and off-page (link profile development)

The name itself will have little to do with your eventual rankings... take a breath, step back and think... Find what you feel works best adn suits your enterprise...

It is you passion that will allow you to 'win' .. so simply choose which you feel good about and move on

There is soooooo much more to do (be doing)

I thought domain name was an important factor for SEO. On a scale of 1-10 how important is your domain name?

hmmmm never had to think of it that way...

0.01 out of 10 (or less).. Many companies use Brand names (Company, product/service) not some KW created name....

As I mentioned, there are many more valuable aspects that easily outrank it...

Certainly do so if it makes sense, just don't lose any sleep over it

    I agree with David,
while it's good to use keywords in your domain name, it's not as crucial as the content and link building.

Everyday I get directory submissions for websites like: mortgage-for-people-with-bad-credit.com

    and i HATE THEM.

So is it the consensus on this forum that having a domain name made of your keywords is not a big factor? It seems like a big factor when I do searches on Google . . . maybe more so for the less competitive niches?

Yes keywords in domain is a big factor. Huge factor actually. Whenever I buy a domain with my targeted keywords in it, I will rank very well for it on Google even if the site has no content in it.

Err... Well, if I was a search engine, it wouldn't matter too much. But SEO isn't about search engines... or it shouldn't be. While it sounds weird, search engines are trying to HELP people find the most convenient results for what they're looking for. So, as far as actual SEO weight, the domain has little importance. However, like I said, you're not trying to get search engines to subscribe to your blog. You want a domain that's easy to ready, spell, and remember. What better way than to have your domain the keyword people most search for!? Brilliant!

CaliforniaStateBar will be your best choice - And that's not opinion. The way search marketing works and the way people think, that is the wise decision.

So one vote for 'huge factor' and one vote for '.01 out of 10' -- who's a newbie to believe? Obviously sites like Amazon, Yahoo and Google don't need keywords in their domain names but what about the little guy. My MO has been to play around with overture inventory and fashion a domain name from popular search phrases. Is this a solid approach or am I misguided?

Also could you explain why 'californiastatebar' would be superior to 'californiastatebarreview' or even 'californiastatebarexamreview.' Wouldn't 'californiastatebarexamreview' return for the 'california state bar' search, the 'bar exam' search and the 'bar review' search? Thanks.

"if I was a search engine" then the domain would matter in a major way! Who should rank well for "Dell Computers?" The actuall company site or some whackjob that SEO'd for the rank?

With that said, I think domain name seo is a SHORT term plan.

And california-state-bar.com would be better than californiastatebar.com i believe. my deduction based upon John's blog post.

I have noticed more success, quicker success with using dashes inbetween keywords in domains.

Well, ya'll need to get a grip... If you really believe there is a discernable weight to a domain-name.com over some one whom has better SEO skills - you know a COMPETITIVE TERM -- than name will simply not save U.

It is a fact. Please do some more SEO work..or trust me. It is a fact. U really believe the SEs are that simple?

You should be studying Search algos, search engineering and reading patents... probably a better idea than asking on DP... the truth is out there....

I learn through studies, research and real world experience... NOT by asking for 'opinions' on forums.. My clients pay for success.. not guessing...

Anyways, I leave it with ya'll...

    best wishes
