    Hi friends.

As per subject, I have a PR5 website to which I would like to add a new section. In terms of domain, what's better to help my Google rank, mydomain.com/blog or blog.mydomain.com?

    Or no difference?

    Thank you!

You are asking about "Subdomain" and "Subfolder". There are different in a Google point of view

    1. Subdomain - Google would see this type as a new domain. Subdomain will not gain any advantage of the main domain power. When the main domain has any of penalization, it will not effect on subdomain.

    2. Subfolder - Google would see this type as a part of website. Subfolder usually gain some advantage of the main domain power. When the main domain has any of penalization, it may effect on a site in subfolder.

If you are going with white hat SEO I would recommend you go for subfolder. It would be easier to promote and got it ranked.

adding a sub folder will help better than sub domain.

Google sometimes penalizes when you link sub domains with a footer link in confusion of domain farming (and link juice transfer).

    So better play safe...

Subfolder and getting it indexed and ranked will be much easier.

It is a matter of how you want Google to see your site structure. As you probably know some of this, /blog is a folder within a site, assuming your mydomain.com is the main page. The blog/mydomain is a subdomain version and is typically treated as a different site structure, not always site structure related to the primary domain. I believe and can be corrected, that the PR is separate in a subdomain, but does recognize the primary domain and with links can help the primary domain. Then again it might not........

My goal is to pool page rank somewhere where it helps the most, the quickest, and best for (you never want to change this later after any success) permanent site structure. My suggestion, (unless it is a large traffic site now with ample traffic, and the site has lots of facets or functions such as secure shopping carts) I always put my blogs in a folder, and not set them up as a separate subdomain name. The blog has a high number of pages that index back to the blog/index.php, but if you have a few pages that are off the main page that are not in the blog, your dedicated pages, then by indexing your blog from your front page, and making sure your blog has your front page on all pages, it should pool all rank to your primary domain and it's index page, as well as page rank well over time for the folders index page. Each page does carry a separate page rank, and in the case of folders, helps pool with correct linking back to your home page.

Use 301 redirect scripts on all brand new sites in your htaccess file towards the www, (I use the www version) to pool rank to one primary domain. WWW is a subdomain too, and also can carry separate page rank! I like Wordpress. It is the best. Just a suggestion, it is open source and has a ton of plug ins for themes (page look), spam control, and functions galore! Good Luck!

Sub folder would be the best place for your blog. A use for a sub domain might be if you created an entirely new site that is based on the main one. We use a lot of sub domains for internal web programs that we use that don't get accessed by the public.

I think if blog.domain.com is better than /blog, it will get more from google.com :).
