What wins; Content or Backlinks?

Right so simple enough question say I have a site that is indexed already by google and have an hour spare. Should I use this hour to write new content for my site or should I build backlinks to the content that is already up?

I know a mixture is the most optimal strategy so I guess what I am actually asking if what does google care about more; the number of backlinks you have, or the amount of unique content you have?

That depends on the quality and number of the backlinks, and the amount and quality of your content.

    - Do you know what SEO is?
-- Have your done keyword research?
-- Have you optimized your site?
-- Have you optimized your text content?

The best answer I can give you is this: Which do you think will work the best? A site with little content and thousands of links, or a site with thousands of pages of content and just a few links?

Hint: Which site would most people find more useful? :)

They are both VERY important. You need the links to rank. You need good content to get people to convert (whatever that means for your particular site) once they are on your site. Good content also leads to more and better links... natural links. Good content causes users to tell their friends about your site.

I understand the importance of both but are they both of equal importance? If you just had one hour to work on your site and in that hour you could either a) write a decent long informative piece of content b) get loads of links

I'm leaning towards a) because if you write good content you can get natural links where as getting loads of backlinks yourself is not going to write you some content

    Which would you do?

There is no point in having good content if you don`t promote it

    Very tough question.

Content is always the king. If you build thousand of backlnks for a duplicate content page, I don't think that it ranks well for long time.

Content & backlinks both are required for search engines. But for user prefers content. So, my vote is to content with good backlinks :).

They are both equally important! Spend 30 min on content, 30 min on backlinks. If you have good content but don't promote what's the use? And at the same time if you rank #1 but have no content that's worthless also! It's like asking what's the most important part of a car, the engine or tires?

Google LOVES content. Other search engines rely heavily on backlinks but Google is very keen on quality and superior content. If you can do both, GREAT. If you have to choose then I would suggest that you analyze first if your site already has quality content, if so then concentrate on building quality back links with great content and at quality sites.

Both. You can rank well with either but for permanent results do both.

In addition, it's not only SE's that want good content, so do the visitors.

It depends on what you are focusing,

If you want to rank high in search engine in timely manner, you can SEO. But if you want to create real value to readers, you can focusing on content creation. You should do both actually. SEO is time consuming and I would suggest you to outsource it to the experts.

Content and backlinks are both essential for any SEO strategy but in my opinion and with my experience, a properly optimized site (on-page) with unique content can also bring fast results.

    So, content rules for me....

Content is always the king of any website. If you have the unique and quality content already made with the proper keywords targeted then you must spend that hour on building the backlinks of your site, but if you build backlinks without having the unique and quality content your effort of spending an hour behind building backlinks will be wasted.

many people said content is the king....and so Backlink is the Queen.....
Which one is more important, King or Queen? ... I think both of them :)
Anyway, I heard that even your content isn't unique, if you got tons of hight quality back link..you can owned search engine...(from my buddy experience)

Both backlinks and contents are important. I generally place same weight for both methods.

As you said both is the optimal strategy. I would say build backlinks. Then when you have another free hour, write some more content.

I would say content is king , try to optimise your content and you will get natural links and build more backlinks if you have more free time.

I have had the best results so far with spending time writing useful content, and by useful content I mean content that is related to an area where people have a question they need answered that relates to keywords you are interested in. I would say a good spread of time is about 75% content, 25% backlinks because devoting time to content will get you more natural links, which in my mind are the endgame when it comes to inbound links.
