What will it take to get a real payment / checkout system on my website?

What has to be done, and how much will it cost to put a legitimate checkout system on my website? For now I only have one product, but I want people to be able to purchase X number of individual bottles or X number of cases of 12. I will also have additional products in the coming months.

    Thanks!

Oh, and I currently have a Paypal account -- is that sufficient or do I need something more?

So what else needs to be done so I can have a very very professional checkout system? Can anyone do this and how much does it typically cost? Does it cost only for the installation, or do I also have to purchase a script or something?

Paypal is sufficient for general use, but you can always look into an osCommerce system. It's open source and fairly configurable, a quick google search should point you in the right direction.

It's not a digital product. I would really like to use an actual shopping cart checkout system on my website as opposed to just paypal buttons.
