Supposedly i'm using joomla and i always had section/category/page.html but then i change it to category/page.html and all the links of the site obviously change. How will it effect the seo of my site. What should i do in cases where i HAVE TO change the links?? Will i loose all the page ranks etc that i had gained on a particular url and it will be no more because the url has changed..??

Just use the right 301 redirects and it will be fine! And use Google Webmaster Central and a good sitemap, that's always good. Good luck!

like j8 said. 301 redirects were designed exactly for this. that is what you want to do.

there is a way to redirect the entire directory. I don't know how. I'm sure someone can do it because I've seen it done before
