What Weight is given to Content?

What weight do the search engines give to content.   I will have better content, even 4 or 5 pages on one topic, yet some stupid sites with 0-none rank better than me. They get quality backlinks, while I struggle to get some. How much is content in this whole website game?

With Google I think good backlinks with proper anchor text are a big part, but with most other search engines, they'll focus on the content.

google gets over half of all searches and you do rank higher if you have more content that is keyword optimized in your site.

Google give more importance to quality links while google gives priority to your content.

SE like content, however video, images, and flash sites can gain top spots with a good amount of backlinks.

Yes, to Google links reign, not quality. But if you think it over a bit, you'll easily get it - if you don't have quality content to share, who will link to you?

unique content is king and it's going to even more so as time goes on...keep developing the good content and also develop some time for link building...over time, your site will rise above the rest.

In my opinion content is the king. Good content will bring good inbound links. You can increase your rank by getting good quality link but all the major search engines are trying to develop a system to rank a page based on his good, quality content. Google is ranking a page based on its backlinks (70%-90%), title, keyword density. So if you have a great resource of quality backlinks you should not worry about your content (at least not now) but if you don't have it, try to make your site as good (when a say good I'm thinking at good and valuable information) as you can.
