I would say they hold the highest rankings for the most search terms on the net yes, however this largely isn't thanks to their SEO. Their SEO is ok, they offer a lot of text content with a minimalistic page which Google likes along with other elements like keyword URL's etc but they could improve upon it quite a bit.

They still have fundamental problems like canonical URL's http://wikipedia.org/ and www.wikipedia.com

They don't have a Meta Description, which can leave less than ideal extracts in the SERP's such as "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Jump to: navigation, search." which lots of pages will display.

All their Title's are structured "Keywords Here - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia" which is "ok" but is diluted quite a bit. They should drop "the free encyclopedia" because it's not directly related to the individual articles content and instead just have
    "Keywords Here - Wikipedia".

The title should describe a pages "content" and their page on say Theology has nothing to do with Free or Encyclopedia. These words will be better used in the footer of the page instead of wasting the most important on-page element on.

There's lots of other minor improvements they could do. One thing they do "brilliantly" though is interlinking related pages with great anchor text. Most pages have at least several in content links to other related pages on the site, which is excellent for both visitors and robots. The W3C is another good example of this, and people should do it a lot more myself included.

With their #1 rank for SEO as you pointed out, yes it's excellent but their domain has millions of authority backlinks, something like 10,000 DMOZ listings and thousands of Yahoo Directory listings. I rank #12 spots behind them for the term "SEO" however i'm not even in DMOZ/Yahoo and have exactly 0.1% of their backlinks. I guarantee if their backlinks were also pointed at my domain they wouldn't stand a chance.

    The answer is: www.wikipedia.org

Find any other site that ranks for more keywords.

SEO is about ranking! Nothing else. I think Wikipedia.org is the #1 SEO site on the internet!

are you sure? But you are on the page 2 for "search engine optimisation blog". "Optimisation" is for UK, I believe, not for US. If you try to compete in "search engine optimization", that would be even harder to compete.

Their link juice is spread over 24,000,000 pages, if you had that much link juice spread over only 10,000 pages (your site is SelfSEO? rank 33 for me.) they would have massive rankings. ;)

Link building is a very important part of SEO, and they do that well, so they are great at SEO.
