What was the world's first "web directory"?

    Hi,

I am interested to know what was the world's first web directory. I think it is not Yahoo and also not DMOZ. Some more, Google certainly out of question since it is a search engine, not a web directory.

Anyone still remember or do know about this?

Anyone expert on "Internet" subject could answer this dumb question?

It would be nice to know whether that directory is still running or not, isn't it?

    Kind Regards,

Technically the term "directory" is a loose term..

Any site with specific site listings could be termed as directory..

In any case the world's first web directory was the first website built at CERN..

Now this is interesting, i guess we all have to thank the man for all that we can acomplish online in these days.

It's funny as back in those days everything were just ideias and concepts and today the online marketing is huge and so full of oportunities.

Big Thank you to the old ones:)

I guess the internet itself was like a directory when it was first created...

The first few webpages were probably directories...

Yeah I always thought BOTW was one of the oldest. On the other hand, didn't Yahoo start out as a directory?

Yes, Yahoo was started out as a directory but later expand to search engine. And now they are serving other services as well - hence, Yahoo is more like a portal. I would like to suggest, an 'online living portal'.

I'm not so sure whether Yahoo was the first directory. So far no one has really answered my question. Well, Tim Berners Lee is 'The Father of Internet' but didn't invent the first web directory (but I do feel thankful to technolarity for bringing his name up ... thanks, bro).

I would like to see if someone could do deep research on this issue & blog it. I would be more than happy to Digg it & give a backlink to that report from my own blog. But make sure that the facts written are correct.
