The only way to know for sure is to split test both setups, to see which one performs better in your particular case.
It depents on the niche, in some cases it's text and in some rich media (almost never pure images). Just put in on both and check the results after some weeks/months and make your decision.

Also use "text and display adds" so Google can decide which is better to display ( for most sites ). Concerning sizes it really depends on the site, niche and layout. There are the recommended sizes by Google which could be a pointing start. Then, follow how they are performing an adapt for best revenue.
I wondering why dont you try both of them to know the real result? different website might have different result, you never know the result without trying
In my case, the link ads have a much higher CPC than any other unit with text/Display ads. I have experimented a lot. As far as Google Adsense Map is concerned regarding ad positions, they surely give you a high CTR. In order to get a high CPC, check which ad units are giving you a higher CPC. In my case, it's more than 10 times for links units vs other units.
It really depends on each site and each niche. To echo what others have already said, the best way to find out would be to do a bit of split testing. I personally have found that the rich media ads result in a higher CPC however the CTR is lower. I have tried and tested all types of ads with Adsense. IMO text ads have performed much better than display ads. Recently I have tried adding link ads "Above the fold" and they are converting okay. You need to really test a lot before you can decide what is best for your website. I was reading somewhere that forget about ads in the header or sidebar, just place them within your content. You must need to use text and display ads to increase revenue. But make sure you are using different size ads.
