I have a blog mainly focused on open source programming, I think i am going to start building more backlinks. A few months ago, all the backlinks i built had the anchor text basically as the domain (minus the .com)

I cant really try to dominate the keywords Open Source Programming, so what should I do?

Or should I still build backlinks on that subject? Could that help me? I know there is almost no chance for me to get in the high rankings of the search engines for that...but what do you guys think?

That keyword is too competitive, but if you're willing to dedicated time and effort to outrank your competition, you can REALLY do it. If not, then choose less competitive keywords that still have good search volume.
