I have a spare PC that I haven't turned on in months and was thinking of repurposing it. I was thinking of a web server or DVR, but was wondering if there was any other cool stuff to do with it? Anyone transformed one of their old PCs?
Turn it into a honeypot --- I turned one of my old PCs into a server so I could learn more about Apache and server security. But in the end it just sat there and did nothing.
Install Ubuntu 7.10, then intall Synergy on both your machines and you got yourself 2 computers, 2 monitors, run through the same keyboard and mouse.
Donate it to someone who is in need of a PC if you are not very serious about converting it into a server.
I've never heard of that before - it looks cool. I had something similar going a while ago using VNC on 2 XP boxes, but once I got over the initial thrill of seeing it all work - I couldn't really find a use for it.
Well on my spare PC. I download movies, songs and other stuff because it is not easy to find some good English movies in local markets. Sometimes I do some experiments with that PC.
Upgrade it and install VISTA on it for experiment Then let them (microsoft) know of bugs in VISTA DON.
make sure it can run for a long time and install software for autosurfing on other sites that exchange traffic. You will get traffic that you can sell.. Also you can run other services on it: like mail, ftp, web server, etc. Turn it into a money making machine
That's the best suggestion so far. I've heard all sorts of crazy stuff about Asterisk and what people are doing with it. I wish I had the balls to get into telephony stuff. http://www.asterisk.org/
a lot of interesting suggestions that I never thought of: seeding torrent and making money through PPI - I may have to look further into this one. upgrade it to a gaming machine - I already have a gaming machine so don't need another one. making it run 24/7 for traffic exchanges and then selling the traffic - another interesting idea I never thought of, thanks set it up to run asterisk - funny you should mention this because I just watched this video - http://youtube.com/watch?v=UP9b_FEZuUE . Sounds awesome, now I just need to get the balls to dive into it more. In regards to the question about specs - it has been so long since I have messed with this thing I can't even remember. It is about 6 years old, but I was still using it to play WoW before I got my new rig. So it's not a beast by any means, but can handle a fair load. A lot of great suggestions, thanks to everyone.
