What to do with email scammers

Discussion in 'General Business' started by Olney, Jan 11, 2005.

My forums all are modded to not let new users PM other users until they post 10 times.

I own a dating site & just got one of those Nigerian email scammers that is messeging people asking for money.

They are now targeting free match systems.

I already lost 1 user who asked for his profile to be deleted.
Any advice? Should I ask my provider to just block out Africa or something?

They are the number 1 reason people won't do business with Africa.

You could make your forum pre-moderated so you can weed out the scum before they post. You could try and find a way to pre-moderate all PMs too.

Or you could just pre-moderate the first 10 posts of each user before they then get full access to the site. You can easily spot them after 10 posts I'm sure.

Sorry maybe I didn't make that clear.

For my dating site the Forums are safe because users can't PM until they have 10 post.
The Dating match system which is free people can message each other as soon as they sign up.

    This is the problem.

So why not wait until they've posted 10 message also?
Or moderate their messages at first?

Or use geotargeting to see where they're from. If from countries you don't want then just block functionality.

OK maybe I shouldn't have mentioned the forum at all.
They are completely 2 different databases.

The match system I own basically people only use it to message each other.

It's not advance enough to give me good options for spammers.
I actually don't like the system but I already paid for it so I'll use it.

So I don't have the option to screen messages BEFORE they are sent.
Plus that is too much work for a free system.

I'll look into geotargetting to just block out Africa from my server.
Hate to do it but most of my Spam/Scam mail is from Africa

They are targetting online shops & dating systems.
Next will centainly be Forums that they can PM people.

Is most of this SPAM coming from the same person (or IP address). Maybe, you could just block a few IP addresses to solve the problem.

Or, have an option to mark a message as SPAM so that the IP address used for that message is permanently blocked for future.
