What to do when you are rebuilding a site

I would assume that the spider would assume that the content it has already spidered and indexed is the same and move on. I guess if you didnt update your site for X amount of months/years they would drop you from the index. I have 2 old sites that are now both gone even though they are still active and they are no longer spidered, indexed or updated.
