Wow. This one's a hard one. Do you remember if you put a Copyright clause in the e-book? If not, they might have leveraged that to their advantage. I'd recommend going on a site called WritersWeekly.com. Angela Hoy and her husband are folks who run a self-publishing business, but they also educate writers and blow the whistle on some unethical practices taking advantage of writers...gladly. Perhaps, they can assist you.

Secondly, if you do happen to do another ebook, you may want to consider giving it reseller rights in the future. If you're content is that good that people want to steal it, you might as well make some backend money off it.

What I mean is that in your ebook, depending on the subject, you put links back to your website, product site, etc., allow others to buy this book from you and resell it as long as you don't give them Master resell right (i.e. they change the content and your name). Allow them to make money off it. You sell the book off your own web page. Have these folks sell and sell and sell for you because people will click on your links back to your website and all the useful other information you have to sell to them.

It's something people are doing and letting it work. You have a right to copyright all of your work if you wish. That is your prerogative. but as bad as it was that someone stole your ebook, someone out their thought the content was good enough to copy....so at least allow the greedy sucker to resell it for you. You will get back end sales that way.

Don't mean to sound macabre, but I hope that can provide you some silver lining out of a bad situation. Good luck to you.

No. What I mean is that typically people write ebooks that are non-fiction, i.e. How to make money online, How to make use of social networks, how to garden, etc.

If your subject or niche is very popular, an ebook with reseller rights gives you the opportunity to get some backend traffic. You can attach affiliate links inside your ebook, a link to your blog, a link to your website, a link to anything you want people to take a look at.

When a person buys your ebook and resells it to other customers, the other customers will read your ebook and click on those links. It's done all the time, even with ebooks that are copyrighted. Some of those authors also sell the ebook off their own websites in case people happen to drop in directly.

The point is that reselling ebooks is another way of drawing more traffic back to you. Remember, in the internet marketing world, the "link" is the key to us making money. Make use of those links as often as you can.

Now, if you're just selling a novel in ebook form, then that's a different story. You do have a legal matter on your hands, and you'll need help there. However, if the person who stole your material is from outside of your country of citizenship, it could be very, very hard to bring them to justice, especially when it involves "electronic or intellectual". Possible, but difficult. You could also consult a lawyer who may be able to assist you.

But, again, I recommend emailing Angela Hoy at her website on Writers Weekly. She has been published. She provides a lot of information, and her husband is an internet marketer as well. So you get the marketing side and the authorship side. They also offer a publishing service if you're interested. Like I said, they have no problems whistle blowing if they see something unethical and people trying to take advantage of writers. They may not be lawyers, but they have confronted people and organizations and at least warned people via the internet. You should check out her site at Writersweekly.com.
