hello everyone. i'm a little confused. from time to time i come up with some nice ideas that can be turned into online profitable websites, but every time i realize i have no possibility to turn any of these ideas into real and online websites. well i have an idea. a good idea is sometimes worth at least consideration, but when i start looking for someone who can help with this i only find people who want money and any other discussion with them is imposible (i'm looking for programmer and web designer right now). i now that money is important, but it is sometimes good to invest time working on something and than receive profits. also, i'm not looking for someone who will do all work for me, but someone who can work WITH me. i must have a really bad luck since i haven't find anyone some time ago i was thinking about selling a few ideas, but i totally have no idea how to do it, without revealing all the details to the general public. anyone has any idea what to do? here's something that i think may be interesting, i posted this on other forum: "I'd like to start a website consisting of user profiles gathered from other community websites. I think that creating another community portal is a bit pointless, there will always be someone who can create something better than you. So, "by accident" I came up with an idea of integrating user profiles from other websites into one big internet profile. This will not only include community websites profiles, but also profiles from dating websites, users online auctions, IM status info and different other information, BUT it will be totally up to my user to pick up which info he/she would like to include. Nothing will be gathered and put on my website without his or her knowledge and decision. Technically speaking, every user will be given a tool to import data from other websites. Only he/she will decide which data and when will be imported. No login and password information will be stored on my website unless such option is picked up by a user. This is a fresh idea for me, I still come up with other usable options and concepts for this. I live in Poland and I'm well oriented about local "community websites" market and would like to start with polish websites, BUT there's nothing against doing it simultaneously in other language (it is impossible to make one global big site. Better option is to do it locally under one logo). So if you live for example in United Kingdom we can target this towards polish and UK market. No big deal for me. Actually it would be good to start this not only in Poland. I'm looking for a PHP/MySQL experienced developer(s) and graphic designer. I have ideas (not only for this website), but no programming skills. I'm looking for someone who can cantribute his talent and knowledge to this project. The idea is very simple, came up whilst importing gmail contact list to my last.fm profile. Funny thing is, that I don't use community websites for my own, but I think that this service may be very handy for others. If you are interested, contact me through my gmail account: dominik.szewior@gmail.com Cheers and forgive for any language mistakes" now, i really think that this can be an interesting idea, but what should i do now, to make it up and running online?
quite an interesting idea. i too, myself have a few ideas which i am going to get done, but also need a partner, for programming and design! a few pointers about yours... what would the other sites such as myspace/facebook/orkut/bebo etc, would they mind you copying content from their websites? Whos adverts would you use.. theres or urs? how would you also keep the functionality of links to friends myspace pages etc which is in myspace, aswell as all the pictures, how would you keep it all working? idea is good, but in practice im not too sure. what other ideas have you got? maybe you could pm me to share them, id be happy to sign a non disclosure and non compete if you would prefer, just to reasure you that im not to run off with your idea, i may be able to help (not as a programmer/designer) but to give you pointers.
i too can see the potential problems quite has highlighted, i would be interested in finding out how you would counter them, especially the whole permissions thing. my partner came to me with his idea, like you he was unsure what to do to make it a reality, and it too was loaded with potential problems. its been a long hard process to get as far as we have, and we still have no idea whether it has all been worth it moneywise. what i can say, its an extremely rewarding time in other ways, i have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the last 8 or 9 months or so, and enjoyed facing all the challenges. i like the concept of your idea and i do think there is potential, but its gonna be tough. the very best of luck with it
Doesn't really make sense.... Users can have different aliases on multiple "communities/sites". This will kinda create A LOT of overlapping information. And to be able to gather ALL that info would not be feasible....
nice idea, but it runs into too many laws in too many countries, privacy issues. these sites aren't allowed, nor will they want to, release their users data to you. That idea is a few decades ahead of this time. maybe later
Maybe this will help you or maybe it will not. When it comes to partners it’s has to be equal. As I am a programmer and know MySQL and PHP very well I’m normally get people asking for me to partner on an idea or project they have, and they want to dump the developing on my back. Frankly this drops back to the basics of investing. When you go find CV’s they normally give you some money, and in turn get a smaller percent of the revenue, while the person with the ideas puts up with running the company with or without employees. However what happens in these small online ventures is that someone else has the idea, and wants another person to carry out the labor for them. This is normally because they do not know how to develop the technology. In most events the person with the idea feels they should get a larger percent of the revenue from the project even though they did not do much at all compared to the guy that had to do all the dog work. For example, 3 years ago I had two partners. We combined a domain, I wrote the technology, and then was asked to develop the marketing, and have my writers write 99% of the content. This left me asking myself WTF are they doing… and in the end I dropped out of the project because the other partners where thinking that they could let the other partner do all the labor and get rich. Unfortunately for them, 2 years later I improved the idea and launched my own version of the idea and single handily made it a success while their site rotted while they hopped from partner to partner trying to grab successes at the labor of others. That said most programmers want to get paid, because they have too many hit and runs, as well as, people who think they have a great idea but do not know what it will take to make it a success. After many years of having a couple partners in many projects, I have dumped just about all of them, and only take on a partner that has already found success and probably has a good amount of money. I do this because I know I will not be the money leader, nor will I be the developer and the marketing guy at the same time. Hell I won’t even develop it 99% of the time and just have one of my guys do it. If you want to find a partner, your best bet is to turn to a friend or someone you know that you trust, and they trust you, because your word is on the line and if you can not produce what you say you think is a good ideas you going to hurt yourself more than you know, and for the guys that you want to fill your shoes to do the job, they are thinking they could already do this themselves, so what do you really bring to the table even if it’s a good idea or not. Most partners have something that adds value to each other, one may be able to develop the technology and the other one is a marketing guru. If you don’t have the guru or the skillz then you need to turn to someone that is looking to scratch out some money because they don’t have any. Additionally as you probably know some countries like Poland has gotten a bad name from years past, so I would not disclose where you are from, because some people will not do business with you if your not in their country due to the fear that your just going to use them and throw them away and they will have no legal action to take when that happens. So remember when hunting a JV, what do you have to offer the other partner? If you have nothing to offer other than an idea, most if not all are going to pass, because like the old saying goes, if you have the idea 3 more have the same idea or better.
you guys are right about the problems with copying content from another websites. i have changed the whole concept a little bit. i will build this around bookmarks linking to user profiles on different community websites. it's about helping your friends finding you. you will for example add digitalpoint.com forums and your nickname. something like: "on last.fm you can find me under this nickname: xxxx" and so on and so on. when someone will ask you, where to find you, you will give him a link to your page on my websites which will tell your friend under what nicknames and on which websites/forums/groups he can find you. i have also a few minor ideas how to make it work the way i want it to work. above all, regarding problems with "stealing" content from other websites... there is always a very advanced technique called "copy - paste" ... but it would be totally dumb idea everything i'm missing is a programmer
don't take this the wrong way..but it sounds too big brother-ish.. practically what your doing,i would imagine the gov has already done- a huge databse of everybody. having all yuour aliases publically listed in one place, invites troubles from stalkers etc. you have a disagrement/banning from one forum..or the other person gets banned..and they decide to pursue you to your other forums to cause havoc..the potential for damage for this idea is enormous. all they would need to do you is lookup where else your a member of. and,if a user is only going to post 2 profiles..kinda defeats the idea of the whole thing. A user would be better making a list themselves on their home computer away from public. and if they want certain people from knowing an email addy for eg, tell them directly...
I would suggest changing that color - it's really hard to read And secondly I'd suggest not putting email address visible to forums... spam-machines are fast these days. --- Regarding the idea: I really think you should simply start working on the site. If you can find somebody to help you out, then fine - but bear in mind that with a team comes also the contracts, communication, motivating problems and so on. I've heard some many stories about those who have great "game ideas" but just need somebody to execute the ideas... and while ideas are fine - it's often the "execution" part that really matters. And not many are willing to stick with doing stuff for free forever. Good luck with your journey though.
I think the very best thing you could do is learn PHP and MySQL. If you don't have the money to pay a programmer then you need to become one.
My best bet would be to take a loan from the bank or someplace and pay someone to do it for you. If you cant afford the risk, it can mean your not motivated and can lead to you failing anyway in the future. Good luck though as this sounds like a cool idea
thanks for your comments. i've included this idea (having links to your profile across different websites) in something i'm working on right now. it has nothing to do with profiles etc, it's going to be a a podcasting website, driven entirely by a "web 2.0 like" community (everyone will be able to publish own podcasts there, but after being accepted by moderators) + everyone will be able tu use copyrighted music without bothering themselves about law problems (i will pay for using copyrighted music, so everything stored on my website will be legal). users will be able to make podcasts about their favourite music, about new albums etc. as i'm not a programmer and know sh... about php first version will be build around open source CMS. right now i'm doing everything by myself and my biggest concern is obtaining proper license agreement. if anyone's interested in this podcasting website feel free to contact me dominik.szewior (at) gmail.com
