What to Do If .com Unavailable

Let's say you have chosen a .com domain you want, but it is already taken and you don't want anything but a .com, what do you do? Or in other words, what would be the best one digit to add after the name so that you can get a .com domain?

For example, pizza.com is not available but if you add something after the a, you could get it. I want to know what would be the best one digit to add.

You might want to add a prefix - something like "i", "e" or "u". Other letters are okay, but these are the most common ones.

You just cry, cry & cry some more! Then you kick yourself for not being quick enough & regging the name. ;)

Don't add numbers after or before the domain, that's just sad. Popular prefixs are "e" & "i" like eGames.com, iGames.com, etc.

Or you get the .net instead or reg something else.

Kills the value of the domain & makes it a lot harder to remember. What's easier to remember, Games9.com or eGames.com?

I think good advise as already been given, use a prefix, get the .net or just come up with a new name.

You could always contact the owner of the .com and make an offer.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, egames does seem better.

Do any of you have a list or know where I can find a list listing the key things to keep in mind when selecting a domain name?

I don't believe in the prefix myself. and the add a "1" or add a "-" is just as stupid.

Just from personal knowledge on the topic I can be sure that using a .net is just as rewarding in the long run. If your site gets to be worth enough, or its good enough no one will care that it is a .net other than you.:)

It depends very much on the site and the name. If your traffic will come mostly from backlinks, search engines and people that bookmarked the site then the prefix shouldn't be so important. Of course, .com is the most popular one and it's always better to have it but you should know better what are your plans for the site and where the traffic will come from.

I would rather go with a .info than start putting in funky numbers/dashes/letters. Of course, e(Keyword) and i(Keyword) doesn't count... but when you start messing with Domainz343242.com... it would be crappy in ANY extension.

If there's something you want and the .net is open, that's what I would do. If you don't care... cough up some money and make an offer to the .com holder.

it depends on the site name and the number you want to go for. But generally numbers are no good with letters. so as stated befor try putting an "i" or "e" before the name you want, or something like that. If that doesnt work come up with something new and original, not every domain is taken.

Fka200 has been online alias for the last 10+ years.

I've always been "torn" about using my online-alias as my blog since I like unique/generic/short domains and Fka200 didn't really do it for me... but it's my personal blog about domains, so I could care-less right now.
