The best software to make web design is Adobe Photoshop. If you finished, you can slice the images and convert it into HTML file.

And then edit your HTML file with macromedia dreamweaver.

Maybe this link is helpful if you want to make a website : (many tutorial in there)

Many don't undestand the difference between web-design and web development.
    Dreamweaver is for development/coding.
To create a design, you need a graphical suite, Photoshop for example.

    Correct.

I would also point out that Dreamweaver is a TOOL. It isnt a website designer! You shouldn't use the WYSIWYG if you want to get a half decant website and code. I use Dreamweaver in Code View purely because I love having syntax highlighting.

If you dont know anything about Photoshop or any other graphics program, I recommend that you do a Google search for tutorials on it. You should also learn xHTML and CSS - tables are not for layouts - they're for TABULAR data .

Yes, i'm also using Dreamweaver for the highlighting, and also for the quick inserts of tags. I save a lot of time during the HTML/CSS coding phase thanks to it. I pity the fools that stick to the idea: "a real coder will code in notepad". You foo's!

If you want to make a valid site and use semantic markup you should learn how to code by hand, using for ex. notepad++. You should learn html and css. I started with DW but reading all the posts here, tried to to make my
first site with css. I downloaded a free template and studied its css, changed things here and there and look at what it did to to sites layout. I visited W3schools.com(some say it´s not so good, but it helped me) Studied more
and more and still more. Now a year later i´m able to make sites with no errors(not sure about semantic markup)
But still the best year i´ve had. It´s really rewarding to learn new things daily. And all this without using anything but a simple texteditor.

About the graphic side, there are free graphic programs that have many similar stuff than PS. Paint shop pro doesn´t cost that much, and i think it has quite the same features that PS has. And then there is Gimp also.

So my opinion is above :)

I have tried all the stuff like dreamweaver and still always come back to free editors like jedit and crimson editor. You have to be able to code but some of that crazy stuff dreamweaver does i cant deal with the headaches.

    I use dreamweaver
I don't have that much knowledge of html yet...and I find it simple to get a site coded using it.

(obviously after slicing the layout in photoshop) :p

I'm such a rookie when it comes to all of this stuff. I'm very interested in learning it though. I'm on hold with godaddy right now, having them help me set my first site. Don't really know where else to turn. From here, sounds like dreamweaver is good, not that I'd even know where to begin using it.

After reading about a 1000 times over the years to use a simple text editor, thats what im currently learning with, notepad, not become in nuts or want to give myself extra headache but because i want to learn how they suggest best, which is XHTML, CSS and notepad or some other text editor.

I was recently going through a tutorial and it suggested not copy n pasting the text but typing it in individually because you actually learn what does what, i did and it really does help, you actually begin to read what your typing.

Regarding design, while i believe if i learn some photoshop it will come in handy, i once again read often that lots of the design done using photoshop can be done with CSS and keeping files smaller.

I dont expect to learn CSS over night, but i know long term its worth the effort.

Fireworks for design, Dreamweaver for code and HTML. They integrate so it's easy to switch back and forth from one program to the other. Photoshop HTML output is not good, so take the time to learn some HTML and CSS in Dreamweaver.

Code by hand... just use smart text editor like PSpad to save a time.

Your code will be about half of DW's code's size and it will be faster and more reliable.
