I am really getting sick of bums asking me for money on the street on in the parking lot. Besides shooting them (what I REALLY want to do) what is the best thing to say to them. Normally I say, "sorry, I can't help you" but they give you an attitude like they are entitled to some of my money somehow. I just hate them and want them dead to be honest as I am really getting sick of these dirtbags. End rant.
Do they look like the caveman in your avatar? I don't ever see any bums like that down here. I bet you live in a big city like new york? When I see bums down here, I feel sad.
I used to feel that way until they started approaching me on average of once a week, roughly. And I will ignore the insult about my avatar. That was really me with a bad hangover...
I always give a bum some spare change or even five dollars for a cup of coffee if they look like they really need it.
Bogart, I forgot to mention that some of these guys do this as a profession. I have heard they can make up to $300 or more a day and I believe it. There are a couple stop lights where the "regulars" work, and it seems to me that about every other time I see them someone hands them a dollar or two. Now, that is just for one 3 minute interval at a stop light where I can observe. Multiple the this by several times an hour and you can see them cashing in big on the kindness of others.
I refrain from giving to pan handlers working traffic lights. Some people are just looking to buy drugs and abusing charity. You have to make a judgement call or better make a small donation to your local mission.
Personally, I don't give to tramps as I believe it just keeps them on the streets - sorry if that sounds harsh but I'm not doing them any favours giving them money. I would buy one a takeaway or a coffee if they really looked genuine and in need though - I'm not totally heartless
I had this lady that would approach me constantly at the gas station. First story she told was she was broke and needed to get insulin for her diabetic daughter. Pointing out her track marks up and down her arm, I refused to give her money. Even if she had a diabetic daughter, the money certainly wasn't going to go to her. For about a month, she would approach me each time with a different story and I would NOT give her money. The last time she asked I finally gave her a mouthful, telling her all the BS stories she told me in the past, stating she must be the unluckiest person in the world to have her car break down, her daughter sick, her mother sick, her house burnt down, etc. She got the point and never asked me for money again. I won't hand out money. If someone looks hungry, they should have no problems with me buying the food and giving that to them. The ones that are truly in need will be grateful and some will be absolutely pissed that they got food instead of money for drugs.
try San Francisco..it is much worse than NYC. NYC bum usually got their own spot and they just stay there everyday. SF's bum is everywhere. They are on bus, bart, shopping mall, fast food. usually those bum won't bother me cause they know Asian won't give them money
STFU Zibblu, seriously, go pull your emotional b/s in another thread. If you want to contribute, feel free, but, instead you're just crying. If they are truely hungry, than I will give them food, I have no problem doing that. But the ones that just want the money for booze and druge (you can generally tell) get a mouth full. I generally tell them to get off their lazy asses and go get a job and work for their money like the rest of us.
Haha xD Well I see your point. I've always said that I wouldn't ever give a bum money. They would probably just buy more alcohol or drugs with it. Whatever it is got them where they are in the first place, usually. I would buy them a meal and some drink. Me and my cousin a few years back saw a bum walking along the interstate so we bought a big bag of cheetos and a 2 liter of coke and went to look for him on the interstate to give him a ride and the food/drink but he disappeared. Then we saw him a few miles down the interstate and gave it to him, and gave him the ride.
My mom always had this thing she'd say when she saw someone begging for money on the streets. She'd look at me and say, son, that could be Jesus. That always stuck with me. You never know who you might be helping. Some day they may be there to help you, when you least expect it. I'm torn when it comes to this, but have always felt that it was easy to disseminate who might actually be "Jesus", and who's a panhandler. There are some rather well dressed smooth operators around downtown Chicago that make upwards of $500/day in a few hours, then spend their nights in nice hotels and eating good food. I've never given any money to anyone better dressed then me, and I dress like a slob. I'm a simple t-shirt and jeans kinda guy (though I have a crazy shoe fetish). Street performers, particularly in New Orleans, NYC, etc., always get something out of me. They are usually college students, or in between jobs. The truly homeless and destitute are not hard to find or recognize. The best way to help I've found is to donate to food pantries or work a soup kitchen. The food pantries REALLY need our help now more than ever. Bums are just that.. Bums. People who are truly needy are humble, and meek. Your few bucks goes a lot further at a food pantry IMO. I've seen people with signs before that say, need money for bus ticket. For them, I offer to drive them to the bus station and buy the ticket. So far no one holding one of those signs has ever taken me up on that offer. There's a lot of sham artists out there, panhandlers and true bums. Want to really help? Donate your time, or to food pantries. This way you know for sure that you are really helping those that need it. The ones that need it the most are most often the ones that do not ask.
I never give bums money. How much of it will go on food? More likely booze and drugs. Most bums are there out of choice, at least here in the UK. I can't account for the US, but here there is plenty of help to get off the street and get a roof over your head within a few weeks, certainly less than one month. Bums who are there for years do it out of choice, so why give money to these sponges? I wouldn't mind if they chose not to participate in a capitalist society but were living off nature, outside the cities obviously. But when their drugg-addled or alcoholic existence depends on handouts, I despise them. There are a minority of long term bums who have mental problems though.
Tell me about it. I spent one weekend in SF and saw more bums in those 2 days than in my entire 25 years of life before then. Unbelievable, nobody tells you about SF the bums everywhere - you hear about the tech companies, the trams, the clubs, the booze, the gays - but nobody ever mentions the bums. And what makes it sad is that many of them are vietnam vets. This is what America does to its veterans. Very sad indeed.
The only crying I've been hearing lately is from the right wingers who can't deal with the fact that they lost the election and that our democratically elected President is doing exactly what he was elected to do. Love It Or Leave It!
The whole "Bum" problem was created by George W. Bush. Had he been keeping an eye on the economy, instead of bombing innocent people in Afghanistan, we wouldn't have near as many "Bums" roaming the streets. Funny how these Neo-cons create the problem and then try to ignore it.
