What to choose between .org and .net?

I found the perfect domain name for a new site of mine, but the .com is taken. Both org and net are available. What would you choose between this two?

Sort of depends what the site is about. For example, if it was something techy related then I would probably go for the .net. What is your market?

I used to prefer .net over the two, thinking .org was the cheapskates way (now I think this way about .info). Now I own a few .orgs, and they will be out soon....

It depends on the topic of your site.

Anything about internet, computers, communications should be a clear .net and non-profit sites should be an .org.
For all the rest I would value .net slightly higher then .org.

I would go with the .net, it seems to be a little more valued than the .org. However, check out your competition in the .com to make sure you are not covering exactly the same thing. If you become a bigger success, he/she may steal some of your customers/readers by accidental typing of .com.

If you can have the .com it will be better. You know that people are typing the extension of the domain by heart sometimes which can be a valuable thing and its always .com after whatever the name of the site is. Of course having .com and .net is the best to insure all the channels will lead to your site and no one will take advantage of this.

    Good Luck!

Well I can backorder the .com for just $19, but I don't understand how exactly that works.
@coolmanphp: yes, that's a good ideea. I will buy both domains ;) and I think I will go with the .net and redirect at the other.

Well it depends weather your site will be making money or not, a .org domain name is for a non profit organisation and a .net is for a network but you can use a .net with any site really, but i think it would look kinda stupid if your site you wanted to make was making money and having a .org domain name :)

From an international point of view I think .net is the best.
I'm generally taking the .net name even if .com is available.

Definately a .net, why would you go for a .org if you have a choice?

In the context of your site, I would go for .NET, but if available still register .ORG and .US and 301 redirect them to the .NET.

Who are you backordering with? The big players in the industry charge about $60 from memory. You may as well forget about winning if you are planning to use GoDaddy unless it is a vague domain.

Ok, so what site should I use to backorder the .com ?
I'll register the .net domain this night. And yes, it's a kind of vague domain, but it's perfect for my niche.
