I saw one site jump up to top ranking in my niche.

How, what and where should i check the reason for this jump?

Should i just check the backlinks?

    What else?

    Thanks all.

You should check on-page optimization factors first.. as on-page optimization plays very important role.

You can also check backlinks, domain age, page rank, design of site etc.

May be you are doing low quality submission or your competitor is doing quality work submission with good content.

You can check site backlinks in seo spyglass software (or any other backlink tool, but spyglass has a very detailed backlink analysis module, and even shows how much value each backlink passes to a site). So, when you actually see all the backlink sources competitors use, it will become more clear why they have better rankings.
