On Dec1st,2008 I wrote an article on my blog www.[dot]KamilAli[dot]com "What the Marketing is Not?"
I also posted it to my Squidoo Lens, Brand Book, where it gained a lot of publicity.

I wanted to ask every business students, professionals (marketing managers, brand managers, CEOs) a very simple question:

Kamil: What do you think of marketing ,is it a common sense, and every one can do it? We don't need to do to business school to learn this skill?
Answers: "Yes! I think so,,just a common sense .Every one can do it, What a big deal.? All we can learn from our experience, no business school necesarry"

Then, I asked some other simple questions:

Kamil: Can you win in a court effectively without having law education? Can you win a war without having military education? Can
you save the taxes of your company without having accounting education?
Well, if your answer is "no". Try this question:

Can you win in a marketplace/business without having marketing education?

Answers: "Aaaaaa.Lemme see.Ok I agree.Hmmm.Look around you! without having marketing and business education, businessmen are doing well "

Despite learning what the marketing "is", we have to learn ,what the marketing "is not". Guess what? Marketing is NOT a common sense. Hence, before understanding the definition of marketing, we have to understand the most important part of marketing. I call it "Marketing Sense".

So what do you think? Marketing is a common sense or not? Why?
In marketing, which one should we use: Marketing sense or common sense? Why?

I never follow common sense. My fiancee claims is due to my dyslexia, but I think in business in general you follow what YOUR intuition tells you. Not what others say. Sure, we have to read, learn, analyze and implement in which or what way works best for us and for our business. I can almost assure you that the majority of the successful IMers often followed their "sense" and not what others told them. I tend to do things contrary and different than what common sense may dictate, and it has worked well for me...

    Naaru Thanks alot for replying:)

Wellll i'll partly agree with you
Yes! One can use common sense in the 10% execution part of marketing....(every field other than marketing require little bit common sense)....
But, one can't use your common sense in 90% strategy part,,, It's a proper education need to be acquired

I think marketing is not selling (at least in the eye of the customers). Marketing is to make people feel good about owning the product.
