Shows you something doesn't it :D . This actually is really good info for all of us, seems like Google is all about anchor text, doesn't it? Well, if it's any consolation, 2 more posts and your signature will start showing up and helping with the anchor text/backlink problem :p !

I've been wondering about this...Does the surrounding text really matter? Or is it the anchor text alone?

i tend to use teh text around the link anchor as well. purely on the likleyhood of it happenning now or in the future. I think it is a debate where the jury are still out. So as it certainly can't harm you to do it. Why not do it?

    Just the anchor text.

However, sometimes people will find page where the anchor text links are and click on them by searching for the text that surrounds the links. I've found websites many of times using this method.

There is no question, I don't think, that good site design is important to search engine rankings BECAUSE if your site is poorly designed, why would someone want to link to you? I think, when building a site, you have to take in to consideration a huge amount of factors to getting to the top of the search engines. Each engine seems to be operating a little differently, so optimizing one way is no longer effective. They are all 'trying' to get smarter and hopefully serve more relevant information.

Bottom line for me is that it is always a work in progress on all sites I have designed. You have to look at your logs to see where most of the traffic is coming from and why. You have to try to stay on the cutting edge to ensure your competitors don't push you out. Good content, good return traffic, good marketing, good inbound links, well desinged, happy little clouds :) and just always look at who your competitors are and where they are getting links from. Also look at other similar businesses in other states and countries and see who is linking to them, you may be able to get some good links that way.

I am not sure what is happening here with the Google. Our site has been working fine for quite some time before it started losing its position and placement on the search page recently. The stuff is regularly updated and kept according to the requirements. Has anyone got any suggestion?
