Long links will likely appear foobar and eat most of your 140 characters. Might wanna reconsider Twitter as a source of traffic rather than backlinks, since you can't set the link anchor text (hence no SERPS) improvements.

I just put up a tweetmeme button in both my blogs. It's great to see people tweeting for me, since I dont have Twitter account.
I think when you have tweetmeme button, just click on it, and you can send out tweet without worrying about short or long link

I love TwitterBar, which integrates with FireFox as a plugin, and enables you to post to Twitter from your Address bar. Very very cool and convenient. Imagine if you are in a website and you would like to post it to your Twitter: simply click a button to the right of the address to tweet it. Of course, you can add your own notes beside the URL.

Search for it in FireFox plugins.

it makes absolutely no difference - as promoman says, they are all nofollow.
url shorteners like bit.ly are permanent redirects, so if posted somewhere that wasn't nofollow would act like 'normal' links.

One point to make...not having anchor text does not mean that it won't help your SERPS....just that it will help less.

Just retweet them with TweetMeme. The little twitter icon shows how many retweets there are so you can build up a large audience tweeting your articles

Yeah a tweetmeme button is a great way to get traffic thru ur existing visitors. Bit.ly provides good tracking as well, if you are looking for a shortening service.

You can put your url in your profile.
To post it to others you'll need to use an url shortener because of the character limit. Twitter will do it automatically for you, using bit.ly - this is a good one to use as you can easily get stats on how many clicks it got just by adding a + to the url (remember that 5 to 10 of these at least, will be bots) or you can choose another url shorterner if you have a preference.
Tell people something interesting about the link, in a few words when you do it. Don't keep doing it, that would be spamming and the people on the other end of it will hate you in a very real and personal way.

I am beginning to like tweetme a lot. It makes it easy for me to tweet my link and it makes it easy for other people to tweet my link too. That's very important, making it easy for other people to tweet your blog posts.
