Where do you read the news, about various events and interviews that relate to SEO, SMM, SMO?
What portals do you recommend? there are some that you fully trust?

And the general, what sources use true professionals?

    I have to recommend http://searchengineland.com

It's the most comprehensive and up-to-date I have found.

I am not affiliated with them, just a happy reader

I agree with SearchEngineLand, I follow that blog a lot, good guides, news and tips. Also follow SearchEngineWatch and SEOmoz which are both very similar, you tend to get a good range of SEO, PPC and Social news following all of those guys.

Hi one I'd have to add to that list is SEObyYeost. He writes a free plugin for SEO for your blog as well and it is really very good. Better than all in one SEO. Otherwise same as been mentioned, SEOMoz, Matt Cutts and of course Google Webmaster tools themselves.

After you have grabbed some basic knowledge of SEO, you should do some practice, and you will learn more in the progress of working. What's more, to chat with some experinced seoers will help you a lot. Actually, there are many forums online about SEO, you just need to do a search and find one that to your taste and hang out there a lot.

SEOmoz has a good blog @ http://www.seomoz.org/blog (I am not affiliated)

If you are just getting started with SEO, I would stick to big-name blogs like that. The search function is your friend!!

Here's a list of topics to study and master:

    1. The difference between "good" backlinks and "bad" backlinks.

    2. The difference between "whitehat" seo and "blackhat" seo.

    3. What is on-page optimization?

    4. Why is it important for my HTML to validate?

    5. What is an anchor text?

These are just a few. There are basically 29 SEO metrics that you need to track on an on-going basis for all of your sites.

Depends on what you want to know. Do you want how to type info or more so to keep up on latest trends and news. IF the latter, then there are a bunch of SEO blogs like search engline land you can read. I have about 50 I follow and just put them all in reader so I can scan the headlines and see which posts are ones I want to click in to read in detail.

Off-line courses and seminars are also very valuable. For example, there is a workshop about SEO this Thursday in Amsterdam, I'd strongly recommend it! https://www.facebook.com/events/333604803515267/
