    There are a number of logo design software that will give you lot of prepared icons to use. I mostly like Adobe Illustrator CS6 because If you are creative enough then you can easily end up in designing a good logo as you have the right tools.

    Bad designers not infrequently sell more. Depending on what is associated with "horrible", because a bad logo can be a lot more recognisable and memorable than a passable, standart one.
    In art in general, it's precisely the unwelocmed wroks the ones to develop into a genre.

    Illustrator is probably the best. Photoshop also good, but in the past I've even used MS paint for video game themed media just to get a pixely feel.

    I can't add much more to this discussion, but I do want to concur and clarify that given the nature of a good logo design you need to be thinking about vector graphics. Software really is just a tool in the same way a pen or brush is and an artist chooses their tools based on what is right for them and the task at hand.

    Of course Adobe Illustrator is the big one for vector graphics and I use it on a daily basis. If budget is an issue to learn or get started, you could try Inkscape or something in the middle.

    Again agreed with the above, Photoshop or Illustrator.

    Although in relation to design ability - it may be worth looking up some design tutorials in advance.

    ahh - ahh i'm one of those who love to design logos with Gimps since, it an open software but, comparing Fiat to Ferrari is questionable.
