Actualy never used gimp in my life. Photoshop is not good for creating logos. For me best software for logos is Illustrator, for others Corel Draw.

Photoshop mainly, and if asked, i use Illustrator for vector logo. Anyways, the software doesn`t matter, only the creativity.

Illustrator is probably the best. You don't really need the most recent update. CS3 and CS4 editions are more than powerful enough for most uses.

If you are bad designer then pickup PS and start making bad logo and maybe they will sell as horrible logo to turn away stinky colleges.

Illustrator is mostly the best software because it's easier to create vector logo with it. Most designer using illustrator but you can use photoshop as well to create logos.

You CAN use Photoshop, but keep in mind that a logo should almost always be vector based. So I would suggest learning a thing or two about Illustrator. Another option would be CorelDraw but the thing with it is that it can be very confusing for a beginner.

Just use inkscape. you need not to use gimp since inkscape if a vector software. and its easy to use and if you are horrible in designing, just do what the tutorials in youtube, folow along it and you can make great logos. xheathenx screencast has best inkscape tutorials, find it on youtube

The best software is always the adobe illustrator. Here are few things you should know that why I am recommended it

1- You can make HIGH quality Vector file (EPS) Extension which later you can use on almost any type of software for further modification and work.
2- You can save the PSD version of file and since lots of people demands that Photoshop file so its easy to export in adobe illustrator.
3- Specially designed for making vector graphics.

Sorry but I don't call Photoshop or even the corel draw as a logo making software and they are not obviously. and rest of the software are not even closer to above mentioned.

I'd recommend Adobe Illustrator mainly due to its versatility being able to create vector images.
