What size should my webpage width be

    Hello,

I've been designing my websites for 960width and I also have some Wordpress themes that are 960px width. But I'd really like to start going up to 1024 or something close to that. I was talked into staying with the 960 about a year ago, but most sites I like and that I find reputable seem to have a larger width.
Any recommendations or scares you can give me to hinder me from making this change? I'm nervous to go that route.

    Thank you :)

I think it is fine to go u to 1024 people with smaller screen resolutions should automatically see it fit to their screen. I think as long as you dont go over 1150 you should be okay. But thats just my opinion.

I haven't seen many monitors with 960px horizontal resolution. If you're aiming at the general audience, either 1024 or 1280 is a good width. If you're aiming at a specific audience, that will determine the screen size. (I still have one client that has all screens set to 800 X 600, so that's what their intranet site is done in.)

base around 1000px because when the vertical scroll bar appears it takes up some pixels on a 1024 based resolution... :)

Thanks everyone! Even my parents who are not computer people have large monitors and laptops. I think it's about time to make the transition to a wider format. I will keep the sidbar in mind and make it a little under 1024 most likely.

thanks again for you input. Very helpful :)

Unless you are willing to make a fluid width based on resolution detection or use css to control min-width / max-width then majority rules but you have to account for the smaller percentage as well... going 1024 will ensure that all will be able to view your site without the annoying need to side scroll... Look at the stats for resolution here => http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_display.asp

It all depends on what your site is and what res your visitors are likely to be using.

If your dealing with a large amount of people in IT then chances are they will all be using larger res screens, but then if your deling with alot of non techy type visitors then you would be better off catering for smaller res screens. Also they region your aiming your site at counts as certain countrys have high avaerage screen res and others are still using very old tech with low res screens.

Only 5% of our visitors are running under 1024px width other than smart phones. Main sceen res used on our sites are: 1280x800, 1366x768, 1024x768, 1280x1024

There is really no difference between 960px, 980px or 990px except for how conservative people are being in allowing for extra space due to browser chrome. These are all variations on the 1024px size.

The real choice is between a size based on 1024px vs one that jumps up to the next common screen size (i.e., 1280).

And considering the proliferation of different screen sizes, you'll almost certainly want to stick with 1024.

The optimum screen resolution used by a large number of users and browsers is 1024*768. So make sure that it should cater to this resolution. Also make sure that the site is center aligned otherwise by default the website would appear to the left by default in screens of higher resolutions.

Screen size has nothing to do with resolution...... If you are just trying to pad your post count, at least contribute some intelligent information.

Looking at the average visitor percentage, I usually give up on pleasing to 100% satisfaction the 1% of site visitors who will incur a minor inconvenience. They will still be able to navigate your site completely, and is you are selling or promoting something, they probably aren't going to spend anything anyway.

I like this idea of using a min/max width in my css. I'm going to look at that also. I'm on the search for a good tutorial. I know how to use it, but i've seen a lot of people running into problems with it, so i'm gonna keep reading up. Thank you for the input!!!! :)

I'm on the W3C site and I can't find a standard of 960px. Can you tell me where I can find that information?
