Was wondering..what are the kinda things i should look for when im registering domains. Should it be the way it sounds..should they be only generic keywords?? P.S: I want to buy domains as an investment
There are many points and it is never a fixed thing. Some things are fixed. EX: take a 3 letter .com But you will have to get it from someone. As they are not available. Next is say invest in 4 letter .com if you believe that 4 letter.com will get more prices. See some TLD's Say .mobi took off but some other TLD's didn't (I would not even tell that .mobi took off. Its just the starting many years are yet to follow.) I wrote some stuff about this last year. : Choosing the right domain name Maybe it will give you some more idea.
The domain's extension also matters. .coms and .nets sell for higher prices than other extensions most of the time.
Don't go nuts buying domains. I did that . It can be addicting so relax. I stopped well before it got out of control. When registering a domain name don't register it because it sounds good to you. It might not sound the same for everybody else. Say the name out loud. Does it sound good? Is it easily remembered. Are 10 people willing to pay for this domain? If not then don't buy it because selling it will be difficult. Pick a niche: will it be 3 character domains, 4 letter, brandable domains etc. Lastly remember that spending $100 on registering 14 domains is probably less valuable then spending $100 on a more valuable domain. Make sure you register .com. Focus on those, they are the most valuable. Just some thoughts. Skinny
I have a friend that used to frantically register domain names when he was drunk or high. The next morning, he would realize that he spent money on crap. What I told him is if you feel you have an amazing idea for a domain name that is available, and if you are not sober, write down then name and then decide in the morning. The following assumes that you want to build a business or community that will eventually become popular, be seen on the news, etc (all bets are off if all you want to do is grab search engine traffic). Keep in mind that 95% of the people on the Internet are non-technical (let's call them Average Users). The meaning of the TLD is 100% based upon their perception of the TLD. Below are the most common perceptions of TLDs. .COM domains are best for businesses. .ORG domains are great for informational websites where you want to engender trust to a community from your ORGanization (get it?). .NET domains tend to confuse the average users (can you think of a .NET website that has ever made the news? Neither can I). Unless you are targeting a niche where people commonly understand the terms, if you want to build and promote a website that will become popular your domain name needs to be evocative, and easy to spell, in English. Best practice is 15 words or less, ideally less than 10 words. Of course, since every good single word domain is taken go for combination phrases of two or three words (ex: RealWorld.???). Stay away from domain names with dashes or underscores in them, they confuse the Average User. Here's a trick to grab Google traffic: register the domain name for at least three years. Google looks to see how long a domain has been registered, and how long it is registered for. If it's only registered for a year they may penalize you.
Really, what you should look for before you buy a domain is the content you want to place at the domain. Would you have bought youtube.com 5 years ago ? didnt think so. Google.com 15 years ago ? nope. Its the content who make the site, not the domain.
1:word with some meaning 2:try to keep short as possible 3:googel searches 4:.extension prefer major extensions if get some good keywords go for cctld like .us .in .co.in 5:good luck
