for someone totally new to web publishing, what aspect should i learn first? for instance, is there any prior knowledge i need to have to understand what PHP is?

HTML first, then either use CMSes or dive into PHP & MySQL.

i agree with SVZ. get a grasp on the basics then move on. i would also suggest that you stay away from any CMS until you udnerstand the language it is mostly written in.

Why would he need to know the language if he wants the basic functionality of the CMS? If you can follow installation instructions, language knowledge isn't needed for most good CMSes. Only when you start customizing it.

I guess his goal is to publish web content. To fully stufy PHP & MySQL first will add 4 months before anything gets published. Study HTML in a day so you know how to bold a phrase, install Joomla and read the manual and he could have a site up in 48 hours.

Then when you see the limitations, start studying PHP whilst the money is already coming in, and code some hacks.

if you have some money you can always pay someone else to do it for you while you learn.

depends where you make your money, is it worth your time to learn a coding language when someone else can do it for you?

(my gut instinct would be to learn the language....but you don't always have time)

    web publishing ...

definetly learn what has been mentioned above,

then dive in to some graphics ... PhotoShop is nice

    After that,

Find out the benefits of what frames/flash/keyword stuffing can for your website. (some research to look in to ...) :D

In my short time on this forum I agree with virtually everything that SVC, WInd Rider, says.

I would add that what you should learn first would really depend upon what your endgame is. WHat is your goal? What exactly do you want to be able to do, and for whom (self employment, etc.)?

true for most people they should learn html first but, if you are computer fast, or just need to meet a deadline, then jump right into php.

if you want a simple site, just learn some html basics, like tables, how to place images, font related tags and some css maybe; then take up a cms and use it to build your site's content (and eventualy modify some of the cms's template by using your basic html knowledge and the find text tool in total commander); knowledge of php/mysql isn't a requisite, unless you don't want to use a cms (except the basics: using phpmyadmin to create a database and set a user/password, and also to import/export databases for backups); anyway, if you have some knowledge of C++ or related programming language, PHP is a breeze
