what should I do with a poo handshake?

Now, you probably wondering what the hell i'm talking about but most directory owners will relate im sure.

On one of my dirs I offer recip and paid options. I appreciate that most of the recips will probably go on pages that will get dropped or be orphaned from the main site, I can deal with that.

What Im having trouble with is when someone puts a link up and goes to all the trouble of specifically writing 'rel=nofollow' aka the poo handshake.

Now that really is an immediate slap in the face, it's like 'I have no respect for you, but i'll take what youve got', they could've at least waited until the listing was approved and then slipped in the nofollow!

So, should I give them a nofollow back, delete the listing or get over it and do nothing?

I personally would delete and ask them to remove my listing as well. It's total crap, and shows someone trying to get one over on others when it's a recip.

If you did a nofollow back it would make your directory look bad as well if there were a lot. Try to avoid these people. In firefox there's a plugin so you see nofollows immediately and can avoid this.

I don't understand why people bother going to the effort of doing a no follow, it's not like there losing anything.

The only time you really need to use a no follow is in situations where you want to discourage spamming.

I think there is a lot of misunderstanding about Google and PR. It's as if they think the jiuce is going to be sucked out of their site.

Links out deflates PR. Just does, and that's the reason. Apparently there is a lot of misunderstanding.

As far as SERPS vs PR there is a difference for sure, but there is PR and it is inflated by pagerank coming in and deflated by PR going out.

    Thanks for clearing that up;)

It's not like a deflating tyre where eventually it will be flat, linking out does have benefits too, especially relevant linking. For example linking to my site :D.

I've been using this, not always accurate but it has alerted me to link removals and it shows if a link is set to nofollow: http://www.manageyourlinks.com/

I think the whole thing is that you don't get backlinks from nofollows thus the whole problem. So I don't hink it would be possible to check backlinks that never come to fruition to begin with.

At least not thru Google, some SEs give backlinks and don't bother not following the nofollow.

Rexona, I love your way with words. Just don't link back to them. If you send out rejection emails, make sure they know you rejected them for assuming you were born yesterday.

I believe there's a Firefox plugin for highlighting nofollows, Search Status.

Cheers everyone, sounds like there is a consensus on deleting and sending a 'thanks for the poo handshake' letter.

Makes me wonder, is that poopee gifts guy still operating?
