Personally I don't believe there is one good way to promote a forum. A good way to start is to use a lot of different techniques to see which ones work best for your particular niche. Starting out by submitting your website to free directories is a technique about people use that seems to work for them. Social bookmarking is definitely going to work well with the gaming niche especially if you actually submit and tag your articles and posts in correct categories. another good idea is to possibly look into buying advertising space on different forms and websites that actually cater to the same niche that you do.
