Hi, I'm used to having my email spammed, but recently one of my blogs has become spam'r'us, and it is really bugging me. I luckily moderate comments before they are posted, but currently have 300 pending comments that I just can't bare to look at, knowing most of them are probably spam... What do you fellow webmasters do about such problems? Best Regards, Anhalo.
there some softwares that can do that for u i just dont which one in not that far in =yet try spam assasin
If you are on WP driven blog then use Akismet plugin. (You can delete all SPAM comments in one go at least) DON.
If you are not on WordPress or even if you are, outside of Akismet, you can have you comments handled by a service such as Disqus. And to the two yahoos before Don, learn how to read the OP and respond accordingly. This thread is not about email spam.
Try to activate Akismet, and then install plugin called, "growmap", i guarantee that you will recieve 0 spam bots Good luck!
According to the GrowMap Anti-Spambot Plugin page, you really do not need Akismet. If you are using your blog for commercial purposes, Akismet requires a usage fee. Since most spam comes from bots, GASP is probably the only thing you will need. Dealing with a few manually entered spam here and there is not really a problem, and if they do become a problem you can blacklist their IP addresses and just keep them off your site. I am not completely sold on this plugin. Reading thru the WP support forum, there is a lot of confusion on how to use it. And if I am not mistaken, may not work on all themes (themes must be 3.0 compatible). There is also an unanswered support question over 3 months old where two people upgraded to 3.0.4 and the current version of the plugin crashed their installation. Both are getting the same error. If I had my choice between Akismet, GASP, or AntiSpamBee I would probably go with GASP as a single-most effective solution. Plus GASP is not over-loaded with complex functions, and algorithms to give off false positives. It does only one thing, stops automated bot comments. Combine GASP with blacklisting and you will be pretty well off spam-wise.
Addendum: After reviewing GASP a little closer, it only handles comment spam. It does nothing for trackback spam. So Akismet in combination with GASP would be preferable. Anybody know of a good trackback plugin or hack to counter trackback spam?
Yeah the plugin site says that, but in fact (based on my experience since i am using it so far) people who want to spam, not a bot, they will pass because they can check the "not a bot" checkbox..So Akismet still comes in handy in this case to me. I am using Akismet and Growmap together, it works flawless.
Kimi I amended that statement. And as for human comment spammers, they are easy enough to deal with. Akismet is still needed for trackback spam, and finding an alternative for that is worth looking into.
Digging even deeper, GASP recommended Simple Trackback Validation to handle trackback spam. I looked at the details and reviewed the code, and seems sound. I am going to use that plugin in combo with GASP, turn off Akisimet, and give it a whirl. Will let you know how things work out after a few weeks. If I don't report back after March 2011, just PM me for my findings.
use a captcha or recaptcha plug-in for your blog, I also had the spam problem and after I installed that plugin , it became ok.
Akismet free for over a week now and only using the two plugins above. Zero bot spam and only one human spam who does not know how to follow my Comment Policy. I turned Akismet back on, reported as spam, and turned Akismet back off. So far this is quite pleasant, and I don't have to deal with all of the reported spam that Akisment spews out. This is kind of refreshing.
