It's totally on what you are going to offer.

If your going to offer web hosting space "buy a reseller"
After you have your resources depleted then go to a dedicated server.

Would it not be a good idea to offer proxy hosting on a reseller package?

Well there are some certain problems you might hold.

The owner of the server of your reseller package have some SSL rules. Like "Proxy, warez, adult content" cannot be hosted. So you can't hold stuff like that. You would need to find proxy hosting hosts and buy a reseller from them.
The other problem is that proxies eat allot of bandwidth. Consume very small space but eats allot of bandwidth. So that would be a problem in the future. You have a limit on your reseller package of bandwidth.

Personally, I've always been a fan of cutting the middle man out and I'd just buy my own server and business-class internet connection.

Sure, it's expensive, but much less so than buying servers from others or colocating.

    But again, that's just me.

Best of luck to you, lolage :)

Hmm, when you say get a dedicated server do you mean rent one? Or physically buy one and stick it in a datacenter?

I would suggest that you do neither, really. Renting them doesn't gain you any benefit unless you don't have the resources to pay for your own.

And if you pay for your own and colocate it (sticking it in a datacenter), you still pay fees that I just don't like paying. This is still a better option if you aren't able to get your own business-class Internet connection and good hardware. Also works good for those who are too busy to manage the server, or just don't have the expertise.

Personally, taking the time to make your own "mini datacenter" is well worth it if funds aren't a problem. I'm working on doing it myself. I can refer you to a great book I found on Amazon.com from Cisco on the subject if you're interested.

I'll warn you though, it can take a lot of work!

I have been in the business of design websites, offering SEO services and also selling hosting. I own 2 hosting companies presently and they both do very well.
Reseller hosting is definately the way to go. Let me give you an example, you can buy reseller hosting for $24.99 monthly. Lets say you have 10 customers hosting with you paying $10 monthly, not only does that cover your reseller hosting account expense, but you also pocket a nice $80 monthly residual income profit.

    Good Luck to You!

Really, you're limited. You need to find a location that offers the highest speed you can afford. You will need both a high download speed, and especially a high upload speed. In my area it's tough because I live in a somewhat rural community, and when I create my datacenter later on this year, I'll have to travel 20 minutes away just to get a decent location.

Hmm, for $25/month do these look good specs?

    SPACE: 100,000MB
    BANDWIDTH: 220,000MB

    Comes with ClientExec.

Not as easy as sticking it in my loft then?

Not usually, unless you have a T1 or greater connection, depending on how much traffic you need to serve up.

And as for the reseller, I've had a lot of great business with LunarPages.com- but that's just me. Their prices are excellent, and the hardware they use withstood many frontpage hits from Digg.com- couldn't be happier.

You should start with a nice template (unique works best) and a reseller account from a reputable host, to ensure maximum reliability.

Affiliate programs work well because you get to have people promoting your site for you.

    Hello,
I recommend HostGator. I have had ZERO problems with them and their support is great. I don't get paid anything by them for telling you that either. :)

I would start small and test the waters before committing to something like a $25/month reseller plan.

There are many reputable hosts out there who offer good reseller hosting for 20-25/month but the truth is you won't have that many customers the first few months. And there are also cheap starter reseller plans from reputable hosts whove been in business for a while and have lots of clients.

I started out with a real cheap plan, and after about 4 months bought a more expensive plan with Hostgator, but that was after I made profit from the cheap plans.

    Hm thanks guys.

However im slightly confused. On the package from hostgator they say for $25 i get:

    24gb disk space
    250gb bandwidth.

    Is that altogether?

Because that in my opinion isnt very good as people like to have around 2-5gb space meaning i can host around 6 people?

    Please help.

That means renting a server from a datacenter or company which offers servers.

That is colocation! - You hire a rack or some space in a datacenter and you buy the machine or send your machine to the datacenter and they will install it.

If you are thinking of starting up a small (At the start) paid web host, go with a reseller account, however make sure you don't go over any limits which your hosts sets. (Such as CPU, MySQL limits) Also make sure you don't oversell, meaning do not oversell the paid web hosting you provide, or you will get booked by your host mainly by using to much CPU, MySQL usually such oversellers go out of business because of this.

There are other reseller companies out there, you just have to look. You can also try FatNetwork.net. I use both FatNetwork.net and HostGator.com and don't have problems with either. Space is really not a factor.
