What Sets A Directory Apart From Others?

I am looking to start a few directories. I was wondering, from the perspective of a potential customer, what entices you to pay for a premium link in a directory? What (if anything) can make a brand new directory be valuable enough for you to spend $3 - $5 on a link? If you imagined a perfect directory, what would it be?

Also, from a business perspective, is it wiser to: Begin by accepting lots of reciprocal submissions to build a base, then charge, or to simply charge from the start? Thank you!

My serious answer would have to be the originality of a fun concept, and / or a very specific niche.
Those are the only two reasons I'd pay to be in a brand new directory.

Dont sell sitewide links, or atleast keep them to a minimum.

Dont just aim to get a homepage with pagerank. Use deeplinks to make sure all the pages of your directory have pagerank, including the link detail pages.

    1. Make it so that regular links and reciprocal links are free for when you start your directory, so that it will start your database up.

    2. Get a good host with the possibility of expansion, one thing that comes to mind would be HostGator.

    3. Get a good script or make your own, so that its easy to manage.

    4. Think of a new concept that hasn't been done, to make your directory different from the others.

    5. Make it look good!

Dont give up on it, it takes time.

Try make your directory unique by offering something that other directories dont offer, or only some offer. Make it exciting with lots of features, people will like that and will buy because they can see a lot of effort has gone itto your directory.

The problem is with most directory's once your site is submitted there is no reason to return so if you can come up with a reason to revisit your directory this would be good.

this is not necessarily true if your directory has lots of links that visitors can use for search purposes. Guess that is initially what directories are meant to be used for right? ;)

In my eyes, a perfect directory would have Everything associated to that category. As in if you were in /Sports/Football/Packers/ you would have news about the packers, images of the packers, a news archive of the packers, Packer Jokes, etc... and finally "External" Packer Links. This is where the directory would sit - as a sub-set of the content. This would be the highest quality and most-trafficed directory if someone could pull it off... (If I only had the time, hehe)
