Hi, im starting a social networking site, and i know im gonna need a server to start off, and more as the site gets bigger but im wondering what kind i should get to start off. Im thinking of going with a dell poweredge 2950 server to start off with http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/pedge_2950?c=us&cs=555&l=en&s=biz or should i get two dell poweredge 1950's? Also im planning on keeping and running all of the servers from my office. I have someone i can hire to set them up and perform the maintenance on them.
i think..initially an unlimited plan..i mean unmeterd b/w and unlimited webspace..wud siuffice..later u cud move on to ure own dedicated server..as the costs are too high..and u need to have a reasonable ROI for ure social networking sites.. nowadays there are so many such sites..i doubt it will be easy to win into.. anyways best of luck..
yea i already have an unlimited plan, im just wanting to buy the server(s) before so i know ill be ready, and as for costs i can probobly get a tax write off as this is a business expense, and i already have enough $$ to get it all started, the sites being made now
Right now i just have standard comcast wireless high speed internet. I have no servers or anything, just a laptop. Whats the difference bwteen these two servers, i know one is 1x intel, and the other is 2x intel, what is the difference bwteen that? What makes one better? http://cgi.ebay.com/Dell-PowerEdge-...hZ012QQcategoryZ51226QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/Dell-PowerEdge-...hZ012QQcategoryZ51226QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem I dont know whether to get two dell 1950's or one dell 2950 or what? Go with less larger servers, or more smaller?
Im going to be ordering from here http://www.lamicrogroup.com/userManufacturerComputers.asp?id=1 but you can customize your servers and add more memory, etc...but i dont know what to add? will standard be fine?
I wouldn't recommend hosting a social networking site (or any other site for that matter) on a standard high speed internet connection. First, it might not even be allowed unless you have a plan with a static IP that allows you to host servers. Next, you have no redundancy whatsoever. That's the reason people lease and collocate servers in real datacenters.
It is better if you lease a sever in a good ISP. Connection speed is everyting. It will also save your money.
Better to lease your server. Your internet connection will cost the same if not more, then renting youyr dedicated server, plus, youlll have all the extra, lide redundancy, in house tech, manage service etc...
Here is a definition : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_center Datacenter are : Softlayer Layeredtech They sell unmanage server. For a manage server I would go with Beachcomber.net
In general: An unmanaged server is normally less expensive and you are responsible for every aspect of maintaining the server. The company you deal with will keep the power going to the machine, keep it cool and keep it connected to the network. You are pretty much responsible for everything else. The server will come pre-loaded with a stock server O/S. You will need to look after creating all the user accounts, setting up the firewalls, server, cron jobs, etc, applying security patches to critical system software and so forth. Some people like to install products like DirectAdmin to simplify some of the management tasks -- even if they are not reselling space. On a managed dedicated server the host looks after keeping the software up to date and running smoothly. If the server goes down, the hosting company will get it back online for you. Kind of like shared hosting -- only with a computer. In both cases, you are responsible for managing content.
Colocate it in the Savvis datacenter is downtown, Dallas, TX, USA I have one with them and they are just great!
is there any way i can buy the server than have it stored at a datacenter and they control it, or is that basically leasing. I dont wanna pay a monthly fee because in the long run its gonna cost me more $$, id like to buy the server than just keep it at a datacenter where they control it.
One of the worst hosting companies I had ever dealt with and I wouldn't even recommend them to my worst enemy.
