They should do a thorough audit of your site, point out any technical problems in your coding, any canonical issues, any redirect issues, any problems with the naming of urls, any duplicate content problems. Audit of titles, headers, internal navigation, usability issues, alt tags Keyword research, suggestions for new content and new types of content if needed, suggestions for link bait, and building backlinks. The one thing I would never expect an SEO to do is submit to a search engine.
A reputable SEO company will do all the things that magda just said. Transparency is what separates the good from the bad. you should expect regular reports on activity and performance. A good SEO company will act as consultants and advise you along the way.
Along with some of the items above Any SEO company worth its salt will analyze competitors. And set targets based on the customers goals. That could be a specific placement in rankings for a keyword, a site , a product, etc.
They rob you blind! Analyzing competitors is definately a good place to begin. There's no reason to recreate the wheel when others have already done a ton of research and development for those particular keywords, products, etc. Using competitors techniques can definately be used as a building block from which you build upon and cater to your own custom needs.
SEO companies are really expensive and if you are a small company trying to get better rankings and sales, it might be costly but well worth it. One thing you can do is hire them for several months and they will always have great detailed reports for you. Once you see what they are doing, just take over from there and start doing this on your own.
A good Seo company would do everything to make the site produce fruitful results and give full satisfaction to their client.

The best answer for this will be that SEO companies 1. Establish a strong online presence for the business. 2. Drive relevant traffic to the business website. 3. Help in the conversion of traffic into customer.
