What search engine did you use BEFORE Google?

Discussion in 'All Other Search Engines' started by Err0r, Apr 3, 2007.

    Today it's impossible for me to use anything other than Google.

    But I remember using many other search engines before Google. The one I used the most was probably AltaVista. I was really proud when I realized it could be accessed with "av.com". :D

    What did you use before you found Google?

    Although it was a directory, I was using Yahoo! Sometimes 1% Altavista, Dogpile and Lycos. Nowdays 99.5% Google and 0.05% Yahoo :)

    Well when Google wasn't the norm, I never had a single SE I turned to, rather, a few;

    Yahoo, MSN, DogPile, Hotbot, Altavista and Lycos.

    Never had a steady one.

    My earliest searches involved using Archie and Gopher :)
    When the web came out, I remember moving to exciting new search engines like WebCrawler, Lycos, AltaVista, Excite and HotBot. These times were interesting in that each search engine would have indexed places the others may have missed.
    I was working for a computer magazine when the Technical Editor just popped in and said, have a look at this search site - It was Google and they were then running from Stanford University. It was not too different from today and was a large difference from the then main engine like AltaVista which had a cluttered main page.

    Nowadays, I use Yahoo and Google, and a few of the other ones when required. One thing that is the pity is people who rely on Google only for example and may miss out very good results from other engines.

    I used Yahoo first then ask because they were telling everyone that they could answer keyword phases better than anyone else.

    Does anyone have a graph of how Google has become the most popular SE? I mean was there a steady growth or overnight everyone started using Google and started saying "Google it" rather than "Search for it"?
